Premier League 2023/24 relegation predictions
I believe that the Premier League’s so-called big six and Newcastle United are almost certainly safe from the threat of relegation this season, but no one else can be so sure.
Leicester City’s demotion last time out should serve as a warning that most teams are never truly established in the top tier.
The three promoted clubs - Luton Town, Sheffield United and Burnley - are expected to be involved in the battle at the bottom, but Bournemouth, Fulham and Nottingham Forest all stayed up last season after rising from the Championship.
Last term’s relegation dogfight went right down to the wire, with three teams unaware of their fate heading into the final day.
Who will be involved this time around? I have run through the odds and put together this analysis of the main relegation candidates.
Luton and Sheffield United odds-on to return to Championship (1/2, 1/16)
A non-league club as recently as 2014, Luton are now among English football’s elite. A penalty shoot-out victory over Coventry City in the Championship play-off final earned the Hatters a place in the big time.
Rob Edwards’ side are the bookies’ favourites to go down this season, but they will not mind being underdogs.
Luton are not the biggest club, but nor are Bournemouth and Brentford. Being well run goes a long way, even at the highest level.
Sheffield United finished second in the Championship last term, and they have been widely tipped to be back in the second tier in 2024/25.
The Blades have not had much money to spend over the summer, but they will hope that team spirit and togetherness goes a long way.
⚽ Luton and Sheffield United are the respective 1/2 and 1/16 favourites to go down with bet365 ⚽
Bournemouth and Burnley both expected to struggle (66/1 and 1/3)
Bournemouth were the relegation favourites for much of last season, only for Gary O’Neil’s side to pull clear of trouble with some excellent form late on.
O’Neil is no longer in charge at the Vitality Stadium, though, with Andoni Iraola installed as his replacement in June.
The Spaniard is an astute head coach, but it is no surprise that Bournemouth are expected to be involved in the relegation battle.
Burnley would probably settle for 17th place if they were offered it now. Promoted as Championship champions in style, survival will be the aim at Turf Moor.
Vincent Kompany was hugely impressive last season and his team are considered the likeliest of the promoted trio to survive.
Is survival again the aim for Nottingham Forest and Everton? (7/4 and 3/1)
Nottingham Forest and Everton were both involved in a relegation scrap in 2022/23, and both clubs will be hoping to avoid one this year.
Forest should benefit from a more targeted approach to recruitment after their gung-ho attitude 12 months ago.
Steve Cooper’s side have more Premier League experience behind them now, but they were dire away from home last season and must improve at opposition grounds.
Everton have a myriad of off-field problems that remain unresolved. The ownership question will hamper Sean Dyche’s team until the club is sold.
Dyche is a top manager, though, and with a full season to work with his players Everton should have enough to avoid the drop.
⚽ Tip either Nottingham Forest (7/4) or Everton (3/1) to go down with bet365 ⚽
Fulham and Wolves could get dragged into demotion battle (22/1 and 80/1)
Fulham punched above their weight last term, securing a top-half finish despite being among the leading contenders for relegation.
Avoiding second season syndrome is now the aim for the Cottagers. Things might not be quite so easy this time around, and finishing outside the bottom three would be deemed as a decent outcome.
Wolves have lost their captain Ruben Neves to Saudi Arabia, but Julen Lopetegui’s decision to stay put came as a huge relief to the Molineux faithful.
Wolves have struggled to score goals for much of their present spell in the Premier League and that is an issue they need to address.
But Lopetegui is a bright manager and under his guidance the West Midlanders should remain a Premier League outfit.
⚽ Fulham are available at 22/1 and Wolves at 80/1 with bet365 to finish in the relegation zone ⚽
