New Zealand head into Saturday's finale as favourites for victory following their commanding dismissal of Argentina in last week's semi final.

The 44-6 victory in the last four means New Zealand will be competing in a record fifth World Cup final, a big comeback having lost their first match of the tournament against hosts France seven weeks ago.

Ian Foster's side recovered to win their three remaining pool games comfortably to take them into the quarter finals to face the world number one ranked side and much fancied Ireland, coming out 28-24 winners.

Whichever team wins on Saturday will win a record fourth Rugby World Cup.

South Africa won their World Cup semi final the hard way, trailing the tie for all of 75 minutes against England before Handre Pollard's 78th minute penalty gave them the a narrow 16-15 victory to send the Springboks through to their fourth World Cup final.

Jacques Nienaber's side also finished second in their group following defeat by Ireland, but managed to get the better of the host nation and pre-tournament favourites France 29-28 in the quarter final in a breathtaking match in Paris.

South Africa have won all three of their previous World Cup finals and are the reigning champions having beaten England in the final in Yokohama four years ago.

This year's final sees a rematch of the 1995 final in Johannesburg, in which the Springboks won 15-12 in extra time to lift the Webb Ellis Cup for the first time, and is the only occasion New Zealand have lost a World Cup final.

New Zealand lead South Africa 4-3 in previous Rugby World Cup encounters, but the last time the two sides met came in a pre-tournament friendly just two months ago, in which the All Blacks fell to a humbling 35-7 defeat at Twickenham.
