Brighton & Hove Albion vs Arsenal predictions
Mikel Arteta took a slight risk when he named his Arsenal team to face Luton Town on Wednesday night.
The Spaniard rang the changes for the visit of Rob Edwards’ side, with Bukayo Saka (who has been carrying an injury), Declan Rice, Jorginho, Jakob Kiwior and Gabriel Jesus all left out.
The likes of William Saliba, Gabriel Magalhaes, Ben White, Martin Odegaard and Kai Havertz ensured there were still plenty of familiar faces in the starting XI, but Arsenal supporters did not expect Arteta to shuffle his pack to quite that extent.
The gamble paid off. Their 2-0 victory was low key and Arsenal did not exactly create an abundance of chances, but they were undoubtedly worthy winners. Luton managed just one shot on target, becoming the latest side to struggle to score against Arsenal’s watertight backline.
Those players who were given a rest should return to the line-up for the trip to Brighton, which will represent a sterner examination of Arsenal’s credentials.
Arteta will feel his side are in a good place right now. They are only the third-favourites to win the Premier League title behind Liverpool and Manchester City, but that is not necessarily a bad thing since it takes some of the pressure off.
Of the 10 top-flight games they have played since the turn of the year, Arsenal have won nine. The sole exception was last weekend’s 0-0 draw with City, which was a better result for Arteta’s side than it was for Guardiola’s.
Yet no one will be getting carried away at the Emirates Stadium. Arsenal fell away in the run-in last term, while they have a tougher set of fixtures on the horizon compared to those of City and Liverpool.
Needless to say, though, Arteta would have settled for being in this position after a 2-1 defeat by Fulham on New Year’s Eve.
Brighton & Hove Albion vs Arsenal betting tips
Arsenal could face a tricky test when they do battle with Brighton & Hove Albion on the south coast.
Arsenal to win - 3/5 (bet365)
Brighton have had a strange season. They understandably prioritised the Europa League - this is the club’s first ever campaign in continental competition - but were knocked out by Roma last month.
The end of 2023/24 may therefore feel like something of a damp squib, but Brighton still have something to play for.
Having now had their first taste of the Europa League, the Seagulls will be keen to return to it. A top-seven finish would probably be enough, with Brighton just two points off that target right now.
They have been inconsistent for much of the season, though, and have failed to win eight of their last 11 outings.

Arsenal are on a roll and they will arrive at the Amex Stadium with a swagger. Brighton were unable to break down Brentford in a 0-0 draw on Wednesday and they will find it even more difficult to get much change out of Arsenal’s rearguard.
The Gunners are unlikely to have everything their own way, but they should ultimately have too much for Brighton.
⚽ Select an Arsenal win at 3/5 with bet365 ⚽
Both teams to score - 13/20 (Betway)
No team in the Premier League has kept as many clean sheets as Arsenal, who have shut out their opponents on 13 occasions.
The Gunners also lead the way for goals conceded and expected goals given up. The statistics and the eye test both show that Arsenal have the strongest defence in the division.
On this occasion, though, we think that backline will be breached. Brighton have only failed to score in one of their 18 home games in all competitions this term.
Joao Pedro, their top scorer who needs just one more goal to reach 20 for the season, is available again. Evan Ferguson should be fit for a place on the bench at least.
Arsenal, for their part, have scored in every fixture they have contested against teams outside the top eight. Clean sheets could elude both sides in this one.
⚽ Go for both teams to score at 13/20 with Betway ⚽
Gabriel Jesus to score or assist - 10/11 (Sky Bet)
Jesus was among those given a rest against Luton. Unlike Rice, Jorginho and Gabriel Martinelli, he did not get off the bench.
That means the Brazil international will be well rested for the match against Brighton, for which he will almost certainly be back in the XI.
Jesus can play through the middle or out on the left, especially with Martinelli unlikely to be ready to start this game after injury.
The former Manchester City man is not and will never be a prolific goalscorer, but he brings so much more to the Arsenal team.
A creator of chances as much as a converter of them, Jesus will be key for the Gunners against Brighton.
Do not be surprised if he is directly involved in an Arsenal goal one way or another.
⚽ Tip Gabriel Jesus to score or assist at 10/11 with Sky Bet ⚽
