Brighton & Hove Albion vs Aston Villa predictions

Thursday night was a mixed one for Aston Villa.

Start with the bad news. The favourites to win the Europa Conference League are likely to be eliminated in the semi-finals after losing the first leg to Olympiacos 4-2.

Villa came from 2-0 down to level things up at 2-2 in front of their own supporters. But Olympiacos struck twice more in the second half to establish a significant advantage ahead of the return fixture in Greece.

It was an even game in Birmingham and on another night Villa could have emerged victorious. But this was a reminder that, while the Premier League is the strongest domestic competition in Europe, clubs from other countries are more than capable of defeating England’s best.

Indeed, the Premier League has only one semi-finalist across all three continental competitions, and Villa’s first-leg loss means the league is unlikely to have a finalist in any of them.

There was good news elsewhere, though. In a rearranged Premier League fixture, Tottenham Hotspur fell to a 2-0 defeat by Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

That was good news for Villa, who are now within touching distance of securing a top-four finish.

Unai Emery’s charges hold a seven-point advantage over Spurs. The latter have a game in hand, but their run-in looks tougher with games against Liverpool and Manchester City still to come.

Missing out on the Europa Conference League trophy, which would be a first major piece of silverware since 1996, would be a disappointment for Villa. But qualifying for the Champions League would more than make up for it.

Emery recently committed his future to the club by signing a new  The owners are ambitious and the recruitment has been broadly excellent in recent windows.

Despite the deflating defeat by Olympiacos on Thursday, Aston Villa are in a good place.

Brighton & Hove Albion vs Aston Villa betting tips

Brighton & Hove Albion and Aston Villa will lock horns in Sunday’s first televised Premier League match.

Aston Villa to win - 13/10 (bet365)

A victory here would see Aston Villa open up a 10-point lead over Tottenham ahead of their meeting with Liverpool at 4pm on Sunday.

That would pile the pressure on Spurs, who would know that a loss at Anfield would officially end their chances of qualifying for the Champions League.

That is quite the incentive for Villa, whose manager will have spent the days before this game ensuring that the Olympiacos setback is out of his players’ systems.

Villa will also benefit from Brighton’s recent downturn. The Seagulls look set to limp over the finish line this season. A 3-0 defeat by Bournemouth last time out saw them drop down to 12th in the table.

Brighton have taken just two points from their last six games. Only relegated Sheffield United have a worse record in that time.

Roberto De Zerbi will also have to make do without eight first-team players on Sunday. Follow the form book in this one.

Both teams to score and over 2.5 goals - 4/6 (bet365)

Most worryingly of all for Brighton fans is the fact that their team has failed to score in four of its last five matches.

That is unthinkable for a side that was rightly praised as one of the most attack-minded and entertaining in the Premier League last season.

We do expect them to get back on track here, though. Aston Villa have kept only one clean sheet in their last eight outings in all competitions. Their defence shipped four goals to Olympiacos on Thursday, having conceded twice to Chelsea a few days earlier.

Despite their recent struggles in front of goal, Brighton have scored in 17 of their 20 matches at the Amex Stadium throughout the campaign.

De Zerbi’s charges can find their shooting boots again, but a side that has let in 11 goals in its last four games will find it difficult to shut Villa out.

Morgan Rogers to score any time - 5/2 (bet365)

Morgan Rogers began his Aston Villa career as a fringe player after joining the club from Middlesbrough in January.

But within a few months of his arrival in Birmingham, Rogers has established himself as a regular starter.

The forward has played for at least an hour in each of Villa’s last 10 matches and he should have a prominent role on the south coast this weekend.

The 22-year-old has scored in his last two Premier League fixtures, finding the back of the net in duels with Bournemouth and Chelsea.

Up against a Brighton backline that has not exactly been watertight of late, Rogers should have plenty of joy.
