PSG vs Toulouse predictions

This year, Paris Saint-Germain’s Groundhog Day came on May 7.

A 1-0 defeat by Borussia Dortmund on Tuesday night ended PSG’s participation in the Champions League. It was their second 1-0 loss to Dortmund in a week, culminating in a 2-0 defeat on aggregate in this season’s semi-finals.

Luis Enrique is the latest PSG manager to fall short in Europe. He joins a list which also includes Unai Emery, Thomas Tuchel (who did at least reach the final), Mauricio Pochettino and Christophe Galtier from recent years.

Although their Qatari financial backing means the club dominates Ligue 1 these days, PSG are still waiting for their first ever Champions League triumph - much to the delight of their arch-rivals Marseille, still the only French side to have been crowned kings of the continent.

In fairness to the Parisians, it was remarkable that they did not score a single goal across the two legs. PSG created an abundance of chances, especially at the Parc des Princes, yet they did not make the Dortmund net bulge even once across 180 minutes of football.

On Tuesday, the hosts racked up 30 shots and 3.25 expected goals. They hit the woodwork on several occasions and forced Dortmund goalkeeper Gregor Kobel into a few smart saves. Try as they might, the ball would not go in.

It's unbelievable [...] football is so unfair sometimes

Luis Enrique, post-match interview

In fairness to PSG, they were not seen as leading contenders to win the tournament this season. Luis Enrique only arrived last summer and set about regenerating the team, with Neymar and Lionel Messi among those to depart.

But with star man Kylian Mbappe on his way out ahead of next term, this will still feel like a missed opportunity for PSG.

Despite being Ligue 1 champions, there will be a sense of disappointment in the air when Toulouse head to the capital this weekend.

PSG vs Toulouse betting tips

Paris Saint-Germain will be looking to bounce back from Champions League disappointment against Toulouse.

Toulouse or draw - 2/1 (Betfred)

In a strange way, it might actually have been better for Paris Saint-Germain if the Ligue 1 title was still on the line with a couple of weekends left to go this season.

If that were the case, PSG would not be able to wallow in self-pity after their exit from the Champions League. They would be obliged to dust themselves down and get straight back to business.

As it is, the opposite may happen. PSG were favourites to reach the final at the expense of Borussia Dortmund, so their failure was a crushing blow that could have implications for the remainder of the domestic campaign.

Toulouse are a capable side. They lost 2-1 to Montpellier last time out, but that was the first defeat in seven Ligue 1 matches. Since the beginning of February, only Lyon, Monaco and PSG have collected more points than Carles Martinez Novell’s team.

Luis Enrique’s charges are not immune from taking their eye off the ball in Ligue 1, especially at home. Surprisingly, PSG have won only one of their last five top-flight games in front of their own fans, with the other four ending in draws.

Both teams to score - 8/13 (bet365)

Paris Saint-Germain have found clean sheets hard to come by at the Parc des Princes this term. In each of their last 10 home encounters in Ligue 1, PSG have conceded.

That will give Toulouse confidence heading into this weekend’s showdown. In their 20 matches in all competitions since the turn of the year, les Pitchouns have scored in 15, including in away games against the likes of Monaco and Benfica.

Novell’s outfit will struggle to finish in the top half from here, even if it is still mathematically possible with two games remaining.

But they will still want to finish the season as strongly as possible having been at the wrong end of the table at the midway point.

PSG should find the back of the net too, even if Luis Enrique uses this as an opportunity to shuffle his pack.

Lee Kang-in to score or assist - 5/4 (Sky Bet)

This could be Mbappe’s final match at the Parc des Princes, at least as a Paris Saint-Germain player.

Luis Enrique’s side will conclude the Ligue 1 campaign with away games against Nice and Metz, before facing Lyon in the Coupe de France final at the Stade Pierre-Mauroy on May 25.

That does not necessarily mean Mbappe will start on Sunday, though. Luis Enrique has not been shy to drop him at times this term, citing his imminent departure as the reason.

Given PSG have nothing left to play for in the league, they could use this as an opportunity to rotate. Lee Kang-in is among the forwards hoping to be handed a chance from the first whistle.

The South Korean has struggled to put the ball in the net this term, but he will be keen to make an impact here.
