Germany vs Ukraine predictions

Throughout 2023, German expectations for the European Championship were extremely low.

Still reeling from a second successive World Cup group-stage exit in Qatar, the Nationalelf stuttered in a series of friendlies last year. Defeats by Belgium, Poland, Colombia and Japan led to the departure of Hansi Flick, who was replaced by Julian Nagelsmann in September.

Further losses to Turkey and Austria followed, but Germany have also defeated France (twice), the United States and the Netherlands under their current manager. Slowly but surely, optimism has returned to the German camp.

The latest betting odds have Nagelsmann’s side ranked as the third-favourites to lift the trophy in Berlin next month. Only England and France are available at shorter odds.

Nagelsmann is one of their strongest weapons. It is doubtful whether the managers of other leading nations - Didier Deschamps, Luis de la Fuente and Gareth Southgate among them - would be hired by an elite European club. Nagelsmann definitely would.

His tenure at Bayern Munich ended in disappointment, but his time at the Allianz Arena has since been reassessed following the difficulties experienced by Thomas Tuchel, his successor.

No one would argue this is the strongest German squad of all time, but it is not short of quality either.

Jamal Musiala and Florian Wirtz are two of the most exciting attacking prospects on the continent. Ilkay Gundogan and Toni Kroos, the latter of whom will retire at the end of the tournament, are still world-class. There are not many better centre-backs around than Antonio Rudiger.

There are weak points, of course, most notably at left-back. But given they will be playing on home soil, Germany will be a force to be reckoned with this summer.

Ukraine are also set to begin their preparations for the tournament. They qualified via the play-offs and will have the support of many neutrals in the coming weeks.

These two teams drew 3-3 last year and we could be in store for another entertaining encounter in Nuremberg.

Germany vs Ukraine betting tips

Germany will take on Ukraine as both teams begin preparations for the European Championship.

Germany to win and both teams to score - 29/18 (VBET)

That 3-3 draw took place almost a year ago. The main reason for the match was to raise funds for charities supporting victims of Russia’s war in Ukraine.

This time, the two managers and sets of players will have the beginning of Euro 2024 at the forefront of their minds. Germany will kick off the tournament against Scotland on June 14, with Ukraine due to play their first game three days later against Romania.

Serhiy Rebrov’s side may have needed the play-offs to qualify, but they were one goal away from finishing above Italy in their group. All things considered it was a decent effort given Ukraine had to play all their qualifiers on foreign soil.

This is a team that should not be underestimated then, and the likes of Mykhailo Mudryk and Artem Dovbyk are capable of causing Germany problems here.

Still, it is hard to look past the Euro 2024 hosts. Nagelsmann will be keen to build cohesion ahead of the opening game, so he should name a strong XI on Monday.

First half higher scoring - 37/19 (VBET)

Germany have announced a 27-man preliminary squad ahead of the tournament, which means only one member of the current group will be dropped before the deadline at midnight on Friday.

Nagelsmann will still want to take a look at as many players as possible in this match against Ukraine and the upcoming clash with Greece.

Ukraine have already named their 26-player travelling party. Unlike most nations, they have three rather than two pre-tournament friendlies lined up. After facing Germany, they will take on Poland and Moldova in the next week or so.

Both Nagelsmann and Rebrov will want to make full use of their squads ahead of the big kick-off, so we could see the two teams make multiple changes at half-time and beyond.

That could result in a reduction in rhythm and fluidity after the break, so the opening 45 minutes may well be more eventful.

Kai Havertz to score any time - 27/20 (VBET)

Germany have two very different options at centre-forward for Euro 2024.

Kai Havertz is less of a false No.9 than often thought when he plays up top, but he does have the ability to drop deep and link the play.

Nicklas Fullkrug, on the other hand, is a traditional targetman striker who excels in the air and gives Germany the option of going more direct.

Fullkrug was involved in the Champions League final on Saturday, so he will not be involved here. That leaves Havertz as the obvious pick at the top of the pitch.

The Arsenal man ended the domestic season strongly and he can make an impression against Ukraine in this match.
