US Open betting preview

Scottie Scheffler looked a prohibitive price at 9/2 ahead of last month’s US PGA Championship at Valhalla.

But for this week’s US Open at Pinehurst No.2, the two-time Masters champion is even shorter at just 10/3.

Of course, Scheffler never got it done at Valhalla after the hard-to-believe headlines of day two when he was arrested while trying to get through traffic for his Friday tee-time.

But take out that freak episode and his play has been extraordinary over the last few months, a one-shot victory at The Memorial Tournament last Sunday securing a fifth win of the season.

Recent US PGA winner Xander Schauffele and last year’s US Open runner-up Rory McIlroy lead the pack hoping to chase Scheffler down.

They’ll try their best on a course that has been used three times before in US Opens.

American Payne Stewart won the 1999 edition at Pinehurst, New Zealand’s Michael Campbell shocked Tiger Woods in 2005 while Germany’s Martin Kaymer ran away from the field to win by eight in 2014.

The Donald Ross design features small greens with sloped run-off areas and a sharp short game combined with accurate driving and crisp approach play will be required.

🏌️‍♂️ Scottie Scheffler just too good

Scheffler’s stats this season are reminiscent of prime Tiger Woods so he surely has to be worth a win only bet at 10/3 with Spreadex.

Scheffler has won five of his last eight events, including the US Masters, so on those numbers he should be an odds-on shot.

Twice in that spell he’s been runner-up while the other wins all came at iconic stops on the PGA Tour schedule - Bay Hill, Sawgrass, Harbour Town and Muirfield Village.

Rory McIlroy has had a good season too but, for context, he’s played in the same event as Scheffler nine times and has yet to finish in front of him. That’s how good Scheffler has been.

Pinehurst No.2 seems perfect for Scheffler’s skill-sets and punters are almost guaranteed a great run for their money.

🏌️‍♂️ Tyrrell Hatton an each-way play

Those who don’t follow the LIV Tour won’t have seen much of Tyrrell Hatton this year.

But the Englishman could be a regular presence on our screens this week as his game matches up well with Pinehurst No.2.

In April, Hatton produced easily his best US Masters finish when tied ninth and he’s ticked over nicely enough with 14th, fifth and 18th in three LIV events since then.

Fifth in the 2018 US Open at Pinehurst, Hatton can grind (he won the 2020 Arnold Palmer Invitational with 4-under) and he’s made the cut in each of the last 10 majors, finishing in the top 20 in half of those.

If it all clicks, Hatton looks a cracking each-way bet at 66/1 (1/5 the odds first 7) with Spreadex.

🏌️‍♂️ Matt Fitzpatrick for Top 10

Matt Fitzpatrick won the 2022 US Open at Brookline and has also managed two 12ths and a 17th in this event starting from 2018.
His strong driving and sharp short game will suit Pinehurst where he was the Low Amateur as a teenager in 2014 and a fifth place at Memorial on Sunday suggests he’s an appealing bet for Top 10 at 17/4 with Spreadex.
