Poland vs Netherlands predictions
The last time the European Championship was held on German soil, the Netherlands were victorious.
A Dutch side containing Ruud Gullit, Marco van Basten and Frank Rijkaard beat the hosts on their way to Euro 1988 glory, which was secured with a 2-0 victory over the Soviet Union in the final.
Ronald Koeman was also part of that triumphant team. He is the man tasked with repeating the feat this summer, as he takes charge of his country at an international tournament for the first time.
The Netherlands have not had much to cheer at this competition for some time. They were eliminated in the group stage in 2012, bowing out with zero points after being beaten by Denmark, Germany and Portugal.
The Dutch did not even qualify for Euro 2016 despite the fact that there were eight additional spaces up for grabs. They then underwhelmed three years ago, going out at the hands of Czech Republic in the round of 16. The last time they reached the last four was 2004.
The Netherlands will of course hope to go all the way this year, but realistically a semi-final berth would be a good achievement.
Their task is complicated by a tricky looking group. France are the second-favourites to lift the trophy next month, while Austria are a team on the up. That makes it essential that Koeman’s side get off to a winning start when they butt heads with Poland in Hamburg.
The Dutch were dealt a major blow earlier this week when Frenkie de Jong was ruled out of the tournament with an ankle problem. The Barcelona midfielder has endured an injury-hit season, but losing him on the eve of the big kick-off puts the Netherlands at a disadvantage.
Teun Koopmeiners has also been forced to drop out of the squad, leaving the Netherlands short of options in midfield. The sudden loss of that pair has cast a cloud over their preparations.
Poland vs Netherlands betting tips
The Netherlands will be looking to pick up a victory when they face Poland on Sunday afternoon.
Draw/Netherlands half-time/full-time - 10/3 (bet365)
Poland only scraped through to Euro 2024. They finished third in a modest qualifying group behind Albania and Czech Republic.
Their showing in the last edition of the Nations League earned them a shot at redemption. Poland thrashed Estonia 5-1 in the semi-finals of the play-offs, then beat Wales on penalties following a goalless draw after extra time.
Victories over Ukraine and Turkey in warm-up friendlies have lifted the mood somewhat, but Poland are still underdogs in Group D.

That means they will focus on keeping things tight on Sunday, especially in the first half. The longer the score is level, the more confident they will become - and, they will hope, the more desperate their opponents will get.
Michal Probierz has made the team more organised after the disastrous tenure of Fernando Santos.
Poland are capable of holding the Dutch in the opening 45 minutes. Overall, though, the Netherlands’ superior quality should ultimately win out.

Netherlands clean sheet - 6/5 (Sky Bet)
Some things never change: Robert Lewandowski is once more Poland’s most important player heading into a major tournament.
Poland’s attacking strategy is based on getting the ball to their centre-forward as often as possible, usually via crosses into the box from wing-backs Przemyslaw Frankowski and Nicola Zalewski.
Unfortunately, though, Lewandowski is past his best. And while he can still score goals as the spearhead of a team like Barcelona, the service to him at international level is not of the same quality.
The Netherlands are strongest at the back. Their pool of centre-halves - Virgil van Dijk, Nathan Ake, Matthijs de Ligt, Micky van de Ven and Stefan de Vrij - is strong and deep.
Koeman will lean on the backline even more now that De Jong, the key creator, is absent. Against a Poland side that is heavily reliant on Lewandowski in the final third, the Netherlands will fancy their chances of keeping a clean sheet.
⚽ Tip the Netherlands to keep a clean sheet at 6/5 with Sky Bet ⚽
Memphis Depay to score any time - 6/5 (bet365)
Memphis Depay had a frustrating season at club level last time out, making just nine La Liga starts for Atletico Madrid.
Yet he nevertheless looks set to start up front for the Netherlands this weekend, with Wout Weghorst a useful option off the bench if things are not going to plan.
Only Robin van Persie has scored more goals for the Dutch than Depay, who has found the back of the net 45 times while representing his country. He is just six strikes short of taking over the No.1 spot.
Poland will sit deep and attempt to spoil - they are no strangers to the dark arts - but the Netherlands should still be able to fashion chances here.
Depay has an excellent scoring record for the Oranje and the odds on him adding to his tally this weekend are attractive.
⚽ Back Memphis Depay to score any time at 6/5 with bet365 ⚽
