Ipswich Town 2024/25 EPL betting tips: What to expect from the betting markets?

Ipswich Town are back in the top flight for the first time in more than two decades. Can they stay there?

Fans can bet on Ipswich staying there, but they can also check the odds for the overall winner of the Premier League if they're curious about how the competition stacks up this season.

⚡My quick betting tip

⚽ Ipswich Town last season overview

Having ascended from League One in 2022/23, last season was supposed to be all about survival and consolidation in the Championship for Ipswich Town. Finishing halfway up the league table would have been celebrated, while the most optimistic members of the club’s fan base may have hoped for a sneaky challenge for the play-off places. But no one envisaged automatic promotion.

Yet that is what they got. Ipswich stormed to a second-place finish in an extremely high-quality promotion battle, finishing two points above Leeds United to guarantee their place in the Premier League. It was a stunning accomplishment overseen by Kieran McKenna in his first managerial job after coaching roles at Manchester United.

⚽ Ipswich Town manager

No manager at any level of English football has done a better job over the last two years than McKenna. In his first full season in charge, McKenna led Ipswich to promotion from League One. He then outdid himself last term with the accomplishment mentioned above, putting Ipswich back in the top tier for the first time since 2002.

Earlier in the summer, fans of the Tractor Boys were worried that McKenna might have been on his way out. Brighton & Hove Albion, Chelsea and Manchester United were all linked with him, and Brighton even made an official approach. Ipswich fans were relieved when McKenna decided to sign a new four-year contract instead.

⚽ Ipswich Town transfers

Crucially, Ipswich have not lost any of the key players from last season. They have spent £20m on Omari Hutchinson, who was contracted to Chelsea but spent the previous campaign on loan at Portman Road. Ben Johnson, a defender from West Ham United, is a smart pick-up as a free transfer, while the goalkeeper Arijanet Muric has arrived from Burnley.

For the most part Ipswich have targeted players who shone in the Championship last year, rather than those with significant Premier League experience. That strategy explains the acquisitions of Conor Townsend, Liam Delap and Jacob Greaves. McKenna will hope for a few more additions before the deadline at the end of the month.

⚽ Ipswich Town objective for the season

Survival. The leap from Championship to Premier League is larger than the one from League One to the Championship, so Ipswich will not be able to replicate last year’s surge. Everyone at Portman Road would settle for a 17th-place finish right now. There is no need to aim much higher yet.

Ipswich will hope that the momentum generated from back-to-back promotions continues into 2024/25, particularly in the first upcoming fixtures. The Tractor Boys will aim to get some points on the board quickly, as that would help to maintain the belief from last season.

⚽ Ipswich Town strengths

McKenna himself is a huge strength. The Ipswich manager is known to be meticulous in his preparation, while he is tactically astute enough to make clever in-game changes. On top of that, McKenna is a master of motivation. It did not take him long to win over the players after his appointment, even those who had been frozen out in previous campaigns. With McKenna in the dugout, Ipswich have a chance.

On the field, the Tractor Boys play an exciting, attack-minded brand of football. No one scored more goals than them in the Championship, with Ipswich finding the back of the net 92 times and drawing a blank in only six of their 46 contests. They throw bodies forward and are capable of overwhelming opposition defences. Without the ball, they press with energy and intent.

For fans and bettors, this high-octane style makes Ipswich an intriguing team to follow on football betting sites.

⚽ Ipswich Town weaknesses

We cannot say it is a weakness right now, but there is a big question mark over how well Ipswich’s style will translate to the Premier League. They will have less talent than their opponents in many games this season. That means Ipswich are in danger of being picked off if they overcommit in attack. McKenna will know this, of course, but we will have to see if his team are able to find the right balance.

There were hardly any negatives to take from last season, but one area in which Ipswich can improve is by starting games quicker. Town were often slow out of the traps in 2023/24; from minutes one to 15, they had the 11th-best record in the division. Remarkably, only rock-bottom Rotherham United shipped more goals in the first quarter of an hour. Ipswich cannot afford to give top-flight teams a head-start.

💰 What do I bet on?

Ipswich Town to be the top promoted club at 2/1 with bet365. The Tractor Boys have momentum behind them and that could help them stay up.
