Newcastle United missed out on European football last season. Will they secure a return to continental competition this time around?
⚡My quick betting tip
- Newcastle United to finish in the top six at 5/6 with Spreadex
⚽ Newcastle United last season overview
Newcastle United took part in the Champions League for the first time since 2002/03 last season. They were drawn in one of the toughest groups ever and ended up finishing bottom behind Borussia Dortmund, Paris Saint-Germain and AC Milan. Their participation in that tournament had an adverse effect on their Premier League form, while an extraordinary injury crisis (the worst in the division measured by days missed) did not help either.
Despite being 10th at the beginning of March, Newcastle recovered to finish seventh in the league table. They only missed out on qualifying for the Europa Conference League because Manchester United won the FA Cup, thus taking their spot in that competition.
⚽ Newcastle United manager
Eddie Howe came under pressure at one point last season, but overall he did a good job in difficult circumstances. But the best English coach in the Premier League has been linked with the job of national team manager following Gareth Southgate’s resignation. If England were to come calling, what would Howe do?
“I absolutely want to stay but it has to be right for me and the club,” he said when asked that very question last month. There's no point in me saying I'm happy staying at Newcastle if the dynamic isn't right. As a new team coming together we have to set our boundaries.” It was not exactly unequivocal.
⚽ Newcastle United transfers
Despite having the richest owners in world football, Newcastle United have been constrained in the transfer market this summer. A need to balance the books to ensure compliance with the Premier League’s profit and sustainability rules has limited Newcastle’s activity, but there have still been a few incomings at St James’ Park.
Lloyd Kelly was the first, arriving on a free transfer from Bournemouth to reunite with Howe. Lewis Hall has made his loan move from Chelsea permanent, while William Osula has joined from Sheffield United. Crucially for the club’s accountants, Newcastle have earned £68m from the sales of Elliot Anderson and Yankuba Minteh to Nottingham Forest and Brighton & Hove Albion respectively.
⚽ Newcastle United objective for the season
The competition for the top four is fiercer than ever in the Premier League. Manchester City and Arsenal will expect to qualify for the Champions League, but you can then make a case for each of Liverpool, Aston Villa, Tottenham Hotspur, Chelsea, Newcastle and Manchester United joining them. All those clubs will hope England’s top flight gets an extra berth based on its teams’ collective performance in continental competition.
Newcastle should not automatically be criticised for not ending the season in the top four, but they must at least put up a challenge. Finishing in the top six while winning one of the domestic cups would be seen as a successful season by the vast majority of Newcastle fans, most of whom were not around when the club last won a major trophy in 1955.
For those who believe in Newcastle’s potential, placing a bet on them through the best football betting sites could offer rewarding odds as they push for success this season.
⚽ Newcastle United strengths
When everything clicks, Newcastle United are a very difficult team to play against. Their energy and intensity has overwhelmed numerous opponents over the last couple of years, particularly those visiting St James’ Park. Even though there was a general drop-off from Newcastle last term, only Liverpool, Manchester City and Arsenal collected more points on home turf.
Howe’s men did not struggle for goals in the fixtures. Only those three sides mentioned above put the ball in the back of the net more often than the Magpies, with Anthony Gordon and Alexander Isak alone scoring 30 goals between them.
⚽ Newcastle United weaknesses
Newcastle United were far too leaky at the back last season. Having had the division’s joint-stingiest defence in 2022/23, the Magpies conceded 62 goals last time out - that is more than 1.6 per game and a worse record than the likes of Fulham, Crystal Palace and Everton. A fully-fit Nick Pope between the posts should help ease those defensive woes.
They also need to do better when playing away from St James’ Park. Newcastle lost 11 of their 19 matches at opposition grounds; only Brentford, Luton Town and Sheffield United suffered more defeats on enemy soil. The Magpies conceded far too many goals on their travels, shipping more than everyone but West Ham United, Luton and Sheffield United.
💰 What do I bet on?
Newcastle United to finish in the top six at 5/6 with Spreadex. Eddie Howe’s side should do better this season after a severe injury crisis and Champions League football halted their progress last time out.
