Wolverhampton Wanderers 2024/25 EPL betting tips: What to expect from the betting markets?

Wolverhampton Wanderers betting tips

Wolverhampton Wanderers stayed up comfortably last term. Can they push on towards the top half in 2024/25?

⚡My quick betting tip

⚽ Wolverhampton Wanderers last season overview

Last season began in the worst possible way for Wolverhampton Wanderers. Just a few days before their opening game against Manchester United, manager Julian Lopetegui concluded that his differences with the club's board were irreconcilable. The Spaniard was replaced by Gary O’Neil, who had very little time to get to grips with his new squad. Given the turmoil, a relegation fight was not out of the question.

Yet thanks in large part to O’Neil’s astute leadership, Wolves were never in danger of being dragged into the basement battle. Despite ending the season poorly - O’Neil’s team lost five of their last six matches - Wolves finished 14th, a whole 20 points above the dreaded dotted line.

⚽ Wolverhampton Wanderers manager

Two years ago, O’Neil was part of Scott Parker’s coaching staff at Bournemouth. After the latter’s early departure in 2022/23, O’Neil was thrust into the hot seat, initially on a temporary basis. He steadied the ship at the Vitality Stadium, earning the gig full-time. But despite keeping Bournemouth in the division, he was dismissed last summer as that club decided to go in a different direction under Andoni Iraola.

O’Neil did not have to wait long for another job at the highest level and he burnished his credentials for much of last season at Wolves. But because he does not have a huge body of work behind him, the former midfielder could do with a strong start to the 2024/25 campaign, particularly given the fact Wolves’ season fizzled out last term.

⚽ Wolverhampton Wanderers transfers

Wolves have generated close to £100m from the sales of Pedro Neto and Max Kilman to Chelsea and West Ham United respectively. That is good for the accounting department in a world of profit and sustainability regulations, but less positive for the football side of things. Neto was superb when he was fit last term, while Kilman was not just a fine central defender but the club captain to boot.

Jorgen Strand Larsen has arrived from Celta Vigo, initially on loan, and will lead the line for O’Neil’s team in 2024/25. Tommy Doyle has made his loan move from Manchester City permanent, while Wolves spent £12.7m to land Rodrigo Gomes from Braga and £8.5m to sign Pedro Lima from Recife. The club will no doubt want to do more business before the window closes at the end of the month.

⚽ Wolverhampton Wanderers objective for the season

In both 2018/19 and 2019/20, Wolves finished seventh. But the sale of key players and a relative lack of investment since then means ambitions have been scaled back. Most Wolves supporters would settle for another mid-table finish this time around, especially if it is paired with a cup run.

“The club is in transition, we are trying to stabilise it,” O’Neill told the Athletic. “Of course, I want to finish in the top six this year if I can but we will just give everything and we will finish where we deserve to finish. I’m pretty sure from what I see from the group that we shouldn’t get ourselves in any trouble. We should be really confident in how we go about things.”

⚽ Wolverhampton Wanderers strengths

Wolves pulled off some memorable results against the big boys last season. They were one of only three teams to beat Manchester City, while O’Neil’s men also gave Chelsea a bloody nose and did the double over Tottenham Hotspur. Neither Aston Villa nor Newcastle United won at Molineux either.

Wolves were often slow out of the blocks in 2023/24, but they did come on strong in the final half-hour of matches. They scored 48 percent of their goals from minutes 60 to 90, while only Arsenal, Liverpool, Manchester City, Aston Villa, Tottenham and Newcastle took more points in that period.

⚽ Wolverhampton Wanderers weaknesses

With Kilman having departed and the 34-year-old Craig Dawson not getting any younger, Wolves look a little light at centre-back. Only six sides conceded more goals than Wolves last season - and half of those are now playing in the Championship. The underlying numbers make for worrying reading too: according to the expected goals data, only West Ham United and Manchester United gave up more chances last season of the 17 teams that remained in the top flight.

Wolves also look particularly vulnerable if a few injuries were to hit. The squad is on the thin side and a handful of absentees across the pitch would leave them in a precious position. That could change before the summer market closes for business, but as things stand there is not a great deal of strength in depth.

💰 What do I bet on?

Wolverhampton Wanderers to stay up at 1/5 with Betfred. A top-half finish will likely be beyond them, but Wolves should be able to keep their heads above water.
