Bayer Leverkusen vs RB Salzburg predictions
No prizes are handed out in November and substantial leads at this stage of the season have been overturned before. Yet you would rather be in Bayern Munich’s shoes than Bayer Leverkusen’s right now.
Bayern are currently six points clear at the top of the Bundesliga having won nine and drawn two of their first 11 fixtures.
Eintracht Frankfurt are in second place and RB Leipzig are in third, with Bayer Leverkusen way down in fourth despite a 5-2 victory over Heidenheim at the weekend. The defending champions are nine points adrift of Bayern with the winter break looming on the horizon.
Leverkusen have only lost one of their 11 league matches up to now, but five draws have dented their championship chances.
As a result, we could see Xabi Alonso’s side start to prioritise the Champions League as time goes on.
One of the reasons the Spaniard stayed put for another season at the BayArena was surely Europe’s premier competition and his desire to pit his wits against the best teams in Europe.
Leverkusen have got off to a mixed start. They demolished Feyenoord 4-0 on matchday one, before running out 1-0 winners against AC Milan a couple of weeks later.
A disappointing 1-1 draw with Brest followed, before Leverkusen were thrashed 4-0 by Liverpool in their most recent Champions League encounter. That result has left them 13th in the table (remember, a top-eight finish is required for a team to qualify directly for the round of 16).
Leverkusen were humbled by Liverpool in that game, but they are still in a decent position at the midway point of the league phase.
Three of their remaining four matches will be at home, including Tuesday’s tussle with Red Bull Salzburg and a winnable concluding encounter against Sparta Prague. In between, Leverkusen will host Inter and travel to Atletico Madrid.
Salzburg have not had a great deal to cheer about in this competition yet. They lost each of their first three games, going down to Sparta Prague (0-3), Brest (0-4) and Dinamo Zagreb (0-2).
A 3-1 victory over Feyenoord earlier this month provided Salzburg with a glimmer of hope, but a place in the top 24 will surely be beyond them.
Bayer Leverkusen vs Red Bull Salzburg betting tips
Bayer Leverkusen are strong favourites to triumph over Red Bull Salzburg in the Champions League.
Bayer Leverkusen -2 handicap
Pep Lijnders, Jurgen Klopp’s erstwhile assistant at Liverpool, is having a tough time of it in his new job.
His Red Bull Salzburg side are struggling domestically as well as in Europe. Usually so dominant in Austria, Salzburg are currently sixth in the Bundesliga, albeit with up to two games in hand on the other teams in the division.

Climbing up that table is surely their priority right now. That does not mean Salzburg will rest players against Bayer Leverkusen, but Lijnders’ attitude will probably be one of damage limitation.
Even that might not be enough. Leverkusen looked refreshed when they hit five goals past Heidenheim at the weekend.
A similarly one-sided contest is likely when these two teams lock horns.

Bayer Leverkusen/Bayer Leverkusen half-time/full-time
Bayer Leverkusen will look to make a fast start to this game. A potentially tricky trip to Union Berlin awaits this weekend, so Alonso would love to have the three points in the bag after an hour of Tuesday’s match.
Leverkusen have only been ahead at half-time in one of their four Champions League encounters up to now.
But with all due respect to Red Bull Salzburg, they are an inferior team to Leverkusen. That should allow the German outfit to establish a lead in the opening 45 minutes.
Although they beat Feyenoord last time out, Salzburg’s confidence is brittle in this competition. Heads could drop if they go a goal or two down.
We anticipate Leverkusen being ahead at half-time and full-time here.

Patrik Schick to score any time
Patrik Schick was the star of the show as Bayer Leverkusen breezed past Heidenheim on Saturday.
The Czechia international scored a hat-trick after being given the opportunity to lead the line by Alonso.
With Victor Boniface still nursing a hip injury, Schick is set to continue at the top of Leverkusen’s formation.
Red Bull Salzburg’s backline has not exactly been water-tight this term. Only Young Boys, Slovan Bratislava and Red Star Belgrade have conceded more goals than their 10.
Because of the threat provided by Florian Wirtz, Aleix Garcia, Alex Grimaldo and Jeremie Frimpong, Salzburg will not be able to focus all their attention on Schick. That could work to the striker’s advantage.
