Barcelona vs Valencia predictions

Barcelona will seek to get their La Liga season back on track when they face Valencia at their temporary Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys home on Matchday 21.

The Catalans started the season in sensational form, winning their first seven, and 11 of their first 12 - including a 4-0 win over bitter rivals Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabeu.

But somehow, Barca have contrived to throw away all that good work and now sit third in La Liga on 39 points, seven behind leaders Real Madrid.

It’s hard to know what has gone wrong. But Barca has picked up just six points from their previous eight matches.

During this poor run of league form, Hansi Flick’s team has qualified for the Round of 16 in the Champions League (they sit 2nd in the table), reached the quarter-finals of the Copa del Rey and won the Supercopa de España, thrashing Real Madrid 5-2 in the final.

So, it really is a mystery as to why their league form has been so bad. The only excuses that can be given is that there has been an injury crisis at the club, and some of the players - Dani Olmo and Pau Victor - may have been affected by off the field issues.

Even so, winning teams find a way to deal with such problems. Barca’s main rivals Real Madrid have had injury issues, and they managed to cope. So questions have to be asked why Barcelona has faltered so spectacularly in recent weeks.

Hansi Flick and his team have the ideal opportunity to reignite their La Liga season against Valencia.

Los Ches sit 19th in the La Liga table with 16 points from 20 matches. They are four points from safety.

Valencia are now managed by former West Brom boss Carlos Corberán. The Spaniard took over from the sacked Rubén Baraja over the Christmas period, and he has already started to steady the ship.

Under Corberán, Valencia has picked up four points in their last two matches. A 1-1 draw away at Sevilla on Matchday 19 was followed by a 1-0 home win over Real Sociedad last Sunday.

The points gained have seen Valencia move off the bottom of the table. And along with the changes being made by Corberán, there is renewed optimism that Los Ches can still beat the drop.

Another positive the Valencia fans can take into the remainder of the season is their team’s defense. Valencia has conceded 29 goals in 20 matches. Only Getafe has conceded less in the bottom eight of La Liga.

Having a decent defense gives Los Ches a platform to build on. But at the other end of the pitch, they have only scored 19 goals.

That is the conundrum facing Corberán. He needs to find a way to score more goals, without opening the floodgates at the back. And an fixture away at Barcelona is far from the ideal match to be trying to fix that problem.

Barcelona vs Valencia betting tips

Barcelona has already qualified for the Round of 16 in the Champions League. They can top the group if Liverpool lose and the Catalans beat Atalanta on Wednesday.

But with qualification now assured, Barca can focus on Valencia on Sunday, without having to worry too much about their upcoming Champions League match in midweek.

We say Barcelona will be fully focused and will pick up a comfortable win over the Valencians. More Barcelona vs Valencia betting tips are below:

Barcelona to score over 2.5 goals

Valencia is trying to consolidate and rebuild. As a result, we expect damage limitation is probably going to be the game plan here.

Doing that against a Barcelona team with 24 goals in their last six matches in all competitions will be difficult.

The Catalans only managed one against Getafe in La Liga last Sunday. But Jose Bordalas’ team has the third best defence in La Liga, with just 17 goals conceded in 20 games.

Putting that anomaly aside, Barcelona seem to have found their scoring boots again, and it’s only a matter of time before they start replicating that form in La Liga.

Valencia looks like the ideal team to get the La Liga goals flowing again for Barca.

Raphinha to score anytime

Where would Barcelona be without this guy?

Raphinha has scored 22 goals in 30 matches in all competitions for Barcelona. The Brazilian has also provided the small matter of 11 assists as well.

Raphinha scored two against Benfica in Tuesday’s remarkable Champions League 5-4 win. He bagged himself a brace and an assist in the 5-2 win over Madrid in the Supercopa de España final, and he added one goal to his season’s tally in the 5-1 Copa del Rey win over Real Betis (he was only on the pitch for 64 minutes).

The former Leeds United winger has gone four La Liga matches without a goal. But we believe the floodgates are set to open against Valencia, providing him with the ideal opportunity to get back to scoring domestic league goals again.

Robert Lewandowski to score first

Robert Lewandoski enjoys playing against Los Ches. The Barcelona hitman has six goals in four appearances against the La Liga strugglers.

Furthermore, five of those goals have come in his last two appearances, including a brace when the two teams met on Matchday 1 of the current season.

The top scorer in La Liga hasn’t found the net in any of his last four domestic league matches. But he warmed up nicely for Sunday night’s fixture by bagging a brace against Benfica in the Champions League on Tuesday.

Lewandowski is just 8/13 to score anytime. We can see the talisman getting the ball rolling in a big Barca win and think with his record against Los Ches, he’s worth backing to score first at 5/2.
