Aston Villa vs Fulham betting predictions

Aston Villa had a difficult April. First they were knocked out of the Champions League by Paris Saint-Germain, before a 3-0 defeat by Crystal Palace prevented them reaching the FA Cup final.

Unai Emery’s side still have something to play for, though, with a top-five finish still within reach. Fulham are also in the mix for Europe, so this is a big game for both clubs.

Aston Villa vs Fulham predictions

It is said that hope springs eternal, but optimism is in relatively short supply at Villa Park right now.

Last weekend’s 3-0 loss to Crystal Palace in the semi-finals of the FA Cup was a huge blow to Villa, who began the match as favourites.

Desperate to win a first trophy since 1996, Villa supporters anticipated a battle with Manchester City in the final. Instead, they were outfought, outthought and outclassed by Palace at Wembley Stadium, as an Ismaila Sarr double and a fantastic Ebere Eze strike sent the Londoners through.

There were no positives for Villa to take away from their performance. Unai Emery admitted afterwards that the better team won. The players who were interviewed, including captain John McGinn, had no excuses either.

Villa were also eliminated from the Champions League last month, so their wait for a first piece of silverware in the 21st century goes on.

Villa battled hard against Paris Saint-Germain in the quarter-finals, though, and throughout their continental campaign they showed that they belong at Europe’s top table.

The objective now is to get back there, for which a top-five finish is required. Villa are down in seventh heading into the weekend. Although they are only three points back from Chelsea in fifth, their goal difference is significantly inferior to the sides around them.

Villa also have a tricky run-in. Fulham are potentially awkward opponents this weekend, much like Bournemouth will be on May 10.

Villa will then finish the season against Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United, two teams who have struggled this term but are still capable of an eye-catching result from time to time.

Two of Newcastle United, Manchester City, Chelsea, Nottingham Forest and Villa will miss out on the Champions League, and the latter’s fate is not in their hands. Villa need favours from elsewhere to get over the line.

However, four wins from their remaining four games would probably be enough for Emery’s team to qualify for the Champions League. That must be the target in the weeks ahead.

“We need to try to get again our full energy playing the last four matches in the Premier League to try and get our objective again to play in Europe,” Emery said ahead of Fulham’s visit to Villa Park.

Who will come out on top when Aston Villa do battle with Fulham in the early kick-off on Saturday?

Draw

The likes of Fulham, Bournemouth and Brighton & Hove Albion will be cheering on Manchester City in the FA Cup final.

If City beat Crystal Palace at Wembley later this month, the eighth-place finisher in the Premier League will qualify for the Conference League. Fulham currently occupy that position.

The Cottagers are having a fine season and they will arrive at Villa Park full of belief that they can get a result.

We do not know how Aston Villa will respond to that disappointment against Palace, but it is easy enough to imagine some sort of negative hangover afflicting Emery’s men.

Villa are strong at home but Fulham have what it takes to avoid defeat in this one.

Fulham to win either half

Fulham came from behind to beat Southampton 2-1 last time out. It was an important comeback; you cannot afford to drop points to the worst team in the division when you are chasing Europe.

It was not a surprise to see Marco Silva’s side come on strong towards the end of that match at St Mary’s Stadium.

Only Liverpool, Arsenal and Nottingham Forest have better second-half records away from home than Fulham.

Villa were flat against Crystal Palace and they appear to be running out of steam after a long and gruelling season.

Fulham should be able to have the better of at least one half at Villa Park.

Ollie Watkins to score any time

Marcus Rashford is out for the rest of the season with a hamstring injury, so Ollie Watkins is in line to start Aston Villa’s four remaining matches.

The England international has had an up-and-down campaign, with first Jhon Duran and then Rashford taking minutes away from him.

Watkins remains an excellent centre-forward on his day and he will be desperate to end the campaign strongly.

The fact he knows he will be in the team in the weeks ahead should help Watkins to play his usual game rather than trying too hard.

The 29-year-old can find the back of the net on Saturday.
