Jack Catterall branded his controversial split decision defeat to Josh Taylor a 'load of s***' in his first reaction on social media.

The challenger boxed brilliantly and scored a knockdown, but the judges instead awarded the champion the victory, which provoked an outcry of 'robbery' from many observers.

The fight began with Catterall boxing well, and he made Taylor step back with a sweet left inside the opening 20 seconds.

Catterall had success with a series of accurate left hands troubling the Scot, who struggled to land clean.

As they hit the halfway mark, the Englishman seemed to be far ahead while Taylor was cut under his right eye.

Catterall stunned Taylor and floored him with an excellent combination of left hooks in round eight, but the home fighter rose to his feet and battled back.

It seemed the challenger had done enough though, with the champion unable to get to grips with him throughout the bout.

However, the judges' scorecards read 112-113, 114-111, 113-112 for Taylor, who retained his undisputed titles in ironically disputed fashion.

Catterall stormed out of the ring in the immediate aftermath, choosing not to do an interview.

However, after a couple of hours, he took to social media to give his thoughts.

First Catterall tweeted his reaction: "Load of s***."

He then added in an Instagram story: "Heart broke," before writing in a separate post.

"You know what hurts the most, it wasn’t for me I done all of this for my family my team my town and country. My baby girl and misses, our future.

"Today I should of been waking up with all of the belts. Fifteen months out the ring, they all wrote me off. F*** me in every way possible for over two years, finally got the fight. Sacrificed everything to fight one of the top p4p ranked fighters, gave him a lesson. For what.

"Boxing shame on you. Judges [emoji with middle finger] Dreams stolen."

A rematch does not appear likely with Taylor now saying he plans to move up in weight.
