Former heavyweight boxing champion Mike Tyson has explained what went wrong for Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez against WBO light-heavyweight titleholder Dmitry Bivol on Saturday night.

The Mexican superstar suffered a shock defeat at the hands of Bivol with all three judges scoring the contest 115-113 after 12 rounds but most observers had the Russian winning by a wider margin.

Post-fight, Canelo announced his intention to rematch Bivol, scuppering plans for a third fight between the undisputed super-middleweight champion and his biggest rival Gennady Golovkin.

Ahead of the potential rematch, Tyson has offered some constructive criticism, as well as tactical advice he feels could lead to Bivol’s demise.

“I think if Canelo was using the jab effectively, hard, the guy wouldn’t be able to come in,” Tyson said.

“The guy was coming in because he wasn’t worried about Canelo’s jab. So, he got more aggressive, he got brave.

“If you’re not jabbing, he has no defence. If he’s not gonna jab, the guy’s gonna walk right in on him like he did. Next fight, use the jab, it’s a different fight.”

The boxing legend then proceeded to demonstrate on his bag how Canelo should utilise the jab and lots of head movement to topple Bivol whenever they rematch.

Prior to this defeat, Canelo had established himself as the best pound-for-pound boxer with a 16-fight unbeaten run that followed his only other career loss to Floyd Mayweather in 2013.

During that run, the 31-year-old became the first fighter from Mexico to hold all four major belts in one division. Canelo beat Callum Smith, Billy Joe Saunders, and Caleb Plant to make history at 168lbs before trying to do the same at light-heavyweight.

Tyson first retired in 2005 before returning to the ring in 2020 for an exhibition bout against Roy Jones Jr. After that, he appeared to walk away from the sport for good but has stayed in shape and continues to consume the sport that made him, often offering his opinion on the big fights.

In his prime, he was one of the most devastating punchers in boxing and Canelo has even said he would love to possess the knockout power of 'Iron Mike'.
