Guillermo Rigondeaux has posted a shocking image of himself showing the facial injuries he suffered when a pressure cooker exploded in his face back in March.

Four months ago, the former elite world champion was involved in a domestic accident which left him hospitalised.

The incident occurred at the Cuban's home in Miami.

Rigondeaux suffered severely burned corneas from boiling water splashing into his eyes in the explosion.

He initially lost 80 per cent of his vision as a result and his chest was also burned.

Now, Rigondeaux has taken to social media to show an image of himself and his injuries.

The graphic picture demonstrated how serious his burns were.

He captioned it: "Every night when I close my eyes this is what I see. Sometimes it's hard to forget.

Rigondeaux is now 41 years old and his boxing future is unclear.

He first burst onto the world stage as an elite amateur, winning consecutive Olympic gold medals for Cuba at Sydney 2000 and Athens 2004.

In his prime as a professional, he was one of the most avoided fighters in the sport.

He reigned as WBA super-bantamweight king and, in 2013, outclassed a prime Nonito Donaire in a performance that warned off other champions.

In December 2017, in the absence of other big fights, Rigo jumped up two weight classes and suffered the first defeat of his career to Vasyl Lomachenko.

He then moved down three divisions to bantamweight and picked up a couple of wins.

In August 2021 though, Rigondeaux was beaten by John Riel Casimero as he challenged for a bantamweight world title.

And last time out, in February 2022, he suffered a shock loss to Vincent Astrolabio in his comeback fight.

Now, at 41, coming off consecutive defeats and with serious facial injuries, it would be quite the remarkable recovery if Rigondeaux can ever return to title contention once again.
