There is a lot of pressure in boxing to maintain an unbeaten record and when Canelo lost to Floyd Mayweather Jr it could have broken him.

In contrast, however, Canelo himself believes that had he beaten Mayweather Jr it could have been even more problematic.

The pair met back in 2013, when Canelo was 23 years old, although he was already 43 fights into his professional career, while Mayweather Jr was 36-years-old and unbeaten in his 44 fights so far.

On the night, Mayweather Jr looked far superior, masterfully out-boxing his younger rival who became visibly frustrated as the fight wore on.

This represented the first loss of Canelo's career, but he quickly bounced back, winning the WBC middleweight title against Miguel Cotto just three fights later.

Since then he has gone on to become one of the top pound-for-pound fighters in the sport and he is currently the undisputed super middleweight world champion.

While at the time The Mexican was upset to lose to Mayweather Jr, he now believes that it was perhaps a blessing disguise.

"I've always said that maybe if I had won that night, everything would have worked out for me." Canelo said  on the DAZN Originals series 'The Making Of'.

"Fame, money, and maybe it wouldn't have worked out well then.

"Maybe I could have gone crazy, it wasn't my time.

"That's the way I take it, it wasn't my time. It took me a few days to accept it."

As of today, however, Mayweather Jr no longer represents his latest challenge, but instead he must prepare for a trilogy bout with Gennady Golovkin on September 17 in Las Vegas.
