Canelo Alvarez vs John Ryder officially announced as Mexico’s undisputed king will return home to defend super-middleweight world titles against British challenger

Canelo Alvarez will return home to Mexico to defend his undisputed super-middleweight world titles against Britain's John Ryder on May 6.

Boxing's pound-for-pound star of North America has been a major PPV draw in the USA for over a decade now and so not boxed in his homeland since 2011.

Back then, Canelo defended his WBC super-welterweight (154lbs) world title against Kermit Cintron.

He has since gone on to win unified middleweight (160lbs) world titles, undisputed super-middleweight (168lbs) world titles and even the WBO light-heavyweight (175lbs) world title.

However, last year Canelo hit a stumbling block as he suffered the second pro defeat of his career.

Having previously only lost to Floyd Mayweather as a 23-year-old, Canelo was beaten by Dmitry Bivol as he failed to once again win a belt at light-heavyweight.

The Mexican is adamant that he wants to rematch the Russian champion, but decided not to do so immediately.

Following the Bivol loss, Canelo returned to super-middleweight and completed a trilogy with Gennady Golovkin, successfully defending his belts against his bitter foe.

After that victory, he underwent hand surgery.

As a result, Canelo has claimed he wants a tune-up homecoming fight in May before returning to face Bivol again in September.

On Tuesday, Canelo confirmed he will face Ryder on May 6 at Estadio Akron in Jalisco, Mexico.

The Brit will be a huge underdog in the fight, despite his great run of form.

Ryder is 32-5 as a pro, though has only lost once since 2017.

That defeat came in his sole world title challenge against Callum Smith and was hugely controversial with many believing he deserved to get the decision.

Last year, Ryder beat Daniel Jacobs and overcame Zach Parker (who suffered an injury midway through the contest) to claim the WBO 'interim' belt and mandatory status for a Canelo challenge.

On May 6, gets the opportunity of a lifetime against the Mexican superstar in his home country.
