Max Holloway thinks Gervonta Davis should follow in the footsteps of his mentor Floyd Mayweather by fighting one of MMA’s biggest stars.

‘Money’ famously ended his legendary boxing career with a money-spinning crossover fight against UFC icon Conor McGregor in 2017.

Mayweather stretched his perfect boxing record to 50-0 and both men walked away with more than $100million following the second-biggest boxing pay-per-view event of all time.

Davis became one of the biggest names in boxing when he knocked out long-time rival Ryan Garcia in a fight that attracted a massive audience and reportedly sold 1.2m PPVs.

‘Blessed’ is fresh off a decision win over Arnold Allen but his MMA future looks uncertain as a featherweight title shot against Alexander Volkanovski is out of the question after three prior losses against the popular Aussie.

Holloway, who calls himself the best boxer in the UFC, thinks now is the perfect time to test his credentials against one of the pound-for-pound best.

“Let’s make a big fight with ‘Tank’ or something. Floyd Mayweather and ‘Tank,’ ‘Tank’ is following Floyd Mayweather’s recipe to the key," Holloway told .

"So, why not fight an MMA guy and we do a big one? I can s*** talk to him. Just don’t put no hydration clause in it like how he did to my man Garcia. That would be a fun one.”

Davis enforced a rehydration clause that meant Garcia could not gain more than 10lbs after weighing in for their 136lb catchweight bout and the former UFC featherweight champion believes that was a big factor in the fight.

Holloway added: “Everybody talking about that shot like, ‘Oh, he would have got up, blah, blah,’ I’m like, ‘Bro, the hydration clause is real,’

“He couldn’t fricken rehydrate properly and that shot, it might not look hard, but to a fricken dehydrated body that hurts a lot. That shot probably hurts a lot even if you’re not dehydrated. So, I can only imagine, man.

“And it came out the same day that he had a rat and he actually got hurt to the body and that sucks. At the end of the day, that was tough but I would love to do a big one. Maybe do [T-Mobile Arena] like they did the Conor [McGregor] stuff.”

It seems unlikely that Davis will entertain a crossover fight at this stage of his career, as he is currently in line for a shot at all the lightweight belts.

Undisputed 135lb champion Devin Haney will defend his four titles against Vasyl Lomachenko on May 20 and the winner is expected to face ‘Tank’ next.
