Canelo Alvarez has given a frank response to his former teammate Ryan Garcia's knockout defeat to Gervonta Davis.

Garcia split from Canelo's long-time coach Eddy Reynoso last year, prompting a war of words between the two boxers.

The veteran champion was critical of the youngster's work rate and attitude, as he took time away from the sport in 2022 due to mental health issues.

Garcia had complaints about how much time Reynoso was able to dedicate to him with Canelo always being the priority in the busy gym.

Reynoso also trained Andy Ruiz, Frank Sanchez, Oscar Valdez and Julio Cesar Martinez, among other fighters across the past few years.

As a result, Garcia left and linked up with Joe Goossen.

Canelo appeared miffed by this decision and predicted that Davis would beat him as a result.

After this indeed happened last month, Garcia has now split with Goossen and is rumoured to have reached back out to Reynoso about potentially reuniting.

Ahead of his own fight with John Ryder on Saturday night, Canelo told about Davis' win over Garcia: “It was a good fight.

"I thought it was gonna be a little more action, but Gervonta's too good."

Garcia has come in for some criticism for the way the fight ended as he sat out the referee's count after taking a hard body shot from Davis.

Asked about the body shot, Canelo replied: "That hurts a lot, but we are fighters, we need to get up.”

Showtime’s All Access Epilogue documentary has now been released and shown what was said in the ring after the fight.

Garcia’s trainer Goossen asked his fighter about the body shot: “Did it hit that rib part at all Ryan?”

“Yeah,” Garcia replied.

Goosen then said: “I knew it.”

To which Garcia explained: “I didn’t wanna continue because of my rib.”
