Exclusive – Khan wants to ‘steal the show’ and finally set up bout with Mayweather

Amir Khan has told talkSPORT he is aiming to “steal the show” when he fights Luis Collazo on the undercard for Floyd Mayweather’s showdown with Marcos Maidana in Las Vegas on Saturday.

Mayweather was set to meet Khan in the main event before pulling out and opting to face Maidana instead, prompting the Bolton-born fighter to tell talkSPORT that the undefeated American “wanted an easier fight”.

The Brit has since accepted the decision and labelled his upcoming fight as the “biggest of his whole life” mainly because it could lead to him getting the bout he craves against Mayweather.

The 27-year-old told Kick Off: “This could take me to the biggest fight of my whole life. I’m not looking past this fight. I want to get a good win but it’s such a big show, fighting on the same card as the chief support on the Mayweather-Maidana fight.

“It’s going to be great, there’s going to be millions of viewers around the world and I think it’s the time for me to steal the show.

“It’s the first time I’ve fought as an undercard fighter in my whole career. It’s great to be on such a big card, I respect that Floyd is the main event and he’s fighting Maidana.

“My time will come one day and it takes a bit of pressure off me not being the main attraction on this fight, it will probably make me perform even better.”

While acknowledging that he desperately wants to face Mayweather, Khan admitted it will mean nothing if he does not see off Collazo.

“I’ve got my whole focus on this one fight even though there’s a bigger picture at the end of this. There’s a Floyd Mayweather fight but to be honest I’ve got to win this fight first.

“If I don’t win this fight then forget about the Mayweather fight happening in the future.
