Evander Holyfield’s son was brutally KO’d by journeyman who had day job as an electrician and only earned $7,500 for their fight

Evander Holyfield's son, Evan Holyfield, suffered a tough first loss of his boxing career to Jurmain McDonald.

The 24-year-old child of the former undisputed heavyweight world champion began as a pro in 2019 and made it to 9-0 before coming unstuck in May 2022.

Holyfield was of course an overwhelming favourite coming into the contest as his opponent McDonald was a journeyman who held a 6-5 record.

He also had a day job as an electrician and so was unable to ever dedicate his full focus to boxing, presumably leaving the Kia Forum in California with his winnings to buy himself some new tools when he returned to work on Monday.

The official purses for the fight released by the commission were $13,000 for Holyfield and $7,500 for McDonald.

Despite all of this, the underdog found a perfect right hand in round two which left Holyfield face down on the canvas.

The 24-year-old was defensively careless and left himself open for the shot, which handed him his first defeat.

Holyfield sat up and attempted to get back to his feet, only for the referee to wave off the fight in favour of a McDonald knockout victory.

The official decided he was in no condition to continue.

Holyfield was unhappy with this initially, but realistically had no right to complain.

He has since bounced back with wins over Terrance Jarmon and Juan Meza Moreno.

He now has a record of 10-1 and will be looking to continue his career in 2024, while he will no doubt look to Holyfield Sr for some advice considering his dad conquered two weight divisions and beat Mike Tyson.

They shared two memorable bouts in the 1990s, with Evander Holyfield coming out on top twice, first against the odds and then during the infamous 'Bite Fight'.

McDonald has also boxed twice since.

However, he's returned to losing ways by suffering a DQ defeat to Brandon Baue followed by a unanimous decision loss to Yoanki Urrutia.
