Oscar De La Hoya believes Canelo Alvarez wouldn't have stood a chance against him when he was in his prime.

Canelo is set to take on De La Hoya's fighter Jaime Munguia on May 4 at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

It marks the first time they have worked together since the Mexican superstar's acrimonious split from Golden Boy Promotions in 2021.

At the launch press conference on Tuesday, Canelo wouldn't even acknowledge his former promoter, but De La Hoya had plenty to say to the media.

After making a passionate case for Munguia's chances against Canelo, the former six-weight world champion insisted he would have beaten Canelo 'easily' back in his heyday with Floyd Mayweather Sr by his side.

“Easy, hands down [I'd win]. Oh easy, nobody, can stop this jab," he told reporters.

"A fighter like me, I would have probably had Floyd [Mayweather] Sr training me. It probably would be a walk in the park.”

De La Hoya worked with Mayweather Sr from 2001 to 2006 during his campaigns at super-welterweight and middleweight.

Together they won the WBA, WBC and Ring Magazine belts at 154lbs and the WBO strap at 160lbs.

In 2007, they cut ties ahead of De La Hoya's fight with Sr's son Floyd Mayweather Jr.

To the surprise of many, Mayweather Sr insisted he would train De La Hoya for the bout provided he received a $2million payday.

However, after much deliberation, De La Hoya chose not to hire his long-time trainer and instead opted for Freddie Roach to lead him into battle.

The split briefly reunited father and son as Mayweather Sr went on to corner Jr for the contest.

However, the reconciliation didn't last long. Roger Mayweather would return to the fold after his legal issues, forcing Sr out of his son's camp.
