Deontay Wilder was often irritated by comparisons to former champions during his time as WBC heavyweight king.

Many critics played down Wilder's title defences against lesser opposition in his 2015-2020 reign and suggested he would not have lasted in the era of Mike Tyson and the other champions who preceded him.

One day, while taking part in an Instagram live stream, Wilder exploded on the topic and ranted: "Let's face it, half of y'all motherf***ers don't know your history when it comes to this sport of boxing.

"You do not know your history, you do not know your facts, you don't know s***.  All you know is what you hear.

"We all like Tyson, of course. We love them all, I love them all, they did a great job.

"Everybody was scared of Mike Tyson, let's face it, because of his aggression, the way he would say it, the things he would do.

"He would be a goddamn psycho, he was nuts, so of course if a person go crazy outside people are gonna get fearful of the person.

"But, if you go back, and I want somebody to answer this question for me, how many Hall of Fame fighters did Mike Tyson actually fight?

"How many Hall of Fame fighters did Mike Tyson actually fight? Don't bring up Michael Spinks who came from light-heavyweight to heavyweight, that was terrified out of his motherf***ing boots.

"And don't bring up Larry Holmes because we already know Larry was way past his prime, so how many of them?

"We gonna do all work today goddamn, I'm going to take you all motherf***ers to school because y'all don't know nothing about what you're talking about."

When someone left a comment saying it was just Evander Holyfield and Lennox Lewis, Wilder continued: "Thank you, thank you. Only two.

"Only two, Holyfield beat him twice and Lennox beat him. Only two, so what the f*** y'all talking about?

"You go back and do your f***ing history. Everybody else was f***ing scared, no Hall of Famers. Only two, only two.

"So get the f*** out of here. When you come to me, do your facts and research."

Remarkably, Tyson is now back in the ring and will face Jake Paul on July 20.

It's unlikely this bout will taint the legend's legacy, no matter what happens, though Wilder may hold it against him!
