Darren Till's transition from MMA to boxing is finally official.
On Wednesday, it was announced that the former UFC welterweight and middleweight will make his boxing debut on the undercard of Jake Paul vs Mike Tyson.
Veteran combat sports reporter Ariel Helwani broke the news of Till's fight against a former world champion on social media.
He : "Breaking: Darren Till will make his pro boxing debut on the Jake Paul x Mike Tyson Netflix card on July 20 at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, TX.
"His opponent will be Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (53-6-1, 1 NC).
"Fight will be contested at 190 pounds. Six, three-minute rounds."
Jake Paul's Most Valuable Promotions quickly confirmed the fight and another one between undefeated prospects H2O Sylve and Floyd Schofield.
“I’m very happy to be a part of this event," Till said in a press release.
"Paul vs. Tyson is going to be one of the biggest events of our generation, and to make my professional boxing debut on it is brilliant.
“I’m very happy with my opponent. I’ve been a fan of his father for many years and I’ve been a fan of Chavez Jr. too.
"He is a great fighter who I respect. But make no mistake about it, I am coming to knock him out in the first round.
"I am happy with where I am in life, and I am coming to make a statement on Saturday, July 20th in Texas.”
Chavez Jr. began his professional career with an impressive 47-fight undefeated streak, but he didn’t reach the level of his famous father, who was perfect for 87 bouts in the sport.
The 38-year-old became the WBC middleweight champion in 2011 before losing six fights, including one against ageing UFC legend Anderson Silva in June 2021.
"I'm excited to return to the ring after some time off, and I'm motivated and eager to reestablish myself as one of the greats,” Chavez Jr. said.
“I was the first Mexican middleweight champion in the history of Mexico and want to prove that I can again become a champion. My return to the ring at this historic event is an honour.
“On Saturday, July 20, I'm going to win by KO and continue my journey.”
