Gervonta Davis knocked out Frank Martin in round eight to defend his WBA lightweight world title on Saturday night in Las Vegas.

The American boxing star put on an intelligent performance as he tired his opponent out before finishing him in the second half of their contest.

The fight began with a bright start for Martin, who landed with more consistency in the opener.

Davis began quietly but flew into life in the final minute of round two as he began to hurl power punches in his opponent's direction.

Tank stalked his challenger in the third, but Martin refused to be overawed and fired back with clever counters.

Davis controlled round four though and found his footing in the fight as he hammered home multiple hard shots.

As they hit the halfway point, the contest was competitive and enthralling, though there was a feeling that the champion was getting closer to a trademark KO as he reduced the distance.

A tired-looking Martin had to grab hold as Davis nailed him with a series of crunching shots in the seventh.

And in round eight, the champion's consistent pressure finally paid off.

Davis cornered Martin and staggered him with an uppercut before finishing him with a single left hand which left him sprawled on the canvas.

The fight was waved off straight away and Davis ran off celebrating.

He backflipped off of the ring ropes while Martin was helped back to his corner.

Davis said post-fight: "I was rusty, but it's okay, I'm back.

"It's okay, no excuses.

"I knew he was gonna tire down, that's what I was doing.

"Once he tired himself out I started picking him apart."
