LISTEN: Billy Joe Saunders tells talkSPORT he 'wants Golovkin or Canelo' after defending WBO middleweight title

Billy Joe Saunders has told talkSPORT he wants to face Gennady Golovkin or Canelo Alvarez next after successfully defending his WBO middleweight title.

Saunders outclassed Canadian David Lemieux on Sunday, winning by unanimous decision in Quebec to retain his belt.

The 28-year-old is now unbeaten in 26 fights, the confident Brit says he is in the form of his life and ready to take on the middleweight division’s elite.

A unification fight with Golovkin is on the cards, with Saunders’ WBO belt being the only title the Kazakhstani - who already holds the WBA, WBC, IBF and IBO belts – is missing.

And, speaking on the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast on Wednesday, Saunders revealed a fight against Mexican star Canelo in May is also a possibility.

He told talkSPORT: “I’m always open to big fights and obviously the fans are most important, so it’s whoever they chose because they pay the money to come and see me.

“But I want Golovkin or Canelo.

"I’ll be back in the gym in three weeks’ time, I’m going to have Christmas off. I’ve been away for six months training, so I’ll have three weeks off, I’ll get back in the gym and I will be ready.

“If one of them gets an injury or one doesn’t sign the contract, I’ll be ready for May for Canelo or I’m ready for whenever Golovkin wants it.

"I’m on a good roll, and now is the time to capitalise on that. I feel on form, I’m fit, the cobwebs are off me now and I feel I’ll be at my best for the next 18 months, so I want to get one of them in that time.

“I’ve had 26 fights and 26 wins - not bad, not bad. I’d like to get to the big 30 and 0, but everyone wants to finish their career unbeaten and the magnitude of fights I’m going to be in are the absolute elite level.

“But I’ll be going in there to win, that’s for sure.”
