Exclusive – Oscar De La Hoya insists Mayweather-Khan was ‘never going to happen’

Former six-weight world champion Oscar De La Hoya has told talkSPORT Floyd Mayweather was "never going to fight" Amir Khan.
Welterweight Khan was desperate to get into the ring with the unbeaten American, who retired recently with a perfect 49-0 record, and there has been plenty of talk about the potential bout over the last few years.
But De La Hoya, who promoted Khan under his Golden Boy umbrella, insists Mayweather was never interested in the fight.
“Amir Khan is one of my favourite fighters because he is willing to face anybody,” De La Hoya said, speaking exclusively to The Sports Bar.
“He’s one of those throwback fighters where he trains really hard, very dedicated, he’ll go up against anybody.
“He was calling out Canelo Álvarez, he was calling out Miguel Cotto, he was calling out [Floyd] Mayweather, who I believe never wanted to fight Amir Khan.
“They were promising him Mayweather, but that fight was never going to happen. Amir Khan wants to fight the very best and he deserves to fight the very best.
“I wish all the luck to Amir Khan and hopefully we can see him in the ring very soon.”
