Floyd Mayweather vs Khabib Nurmagomedov: Russia plan bid to host potential fight, name Luzhniki Stadium as possible venue

The Russian Boxing Federation are already eyeing the bout

The Russian Boxing Federation are plotting a bid to host Floyd Mayweather vs Khabib Nurmagomedov, if the rumoured fight comes to fruition.

Former pound-for-pound boxing king Mayweather has teased a comeback against UFC champion Nurmagomedov in the aftermath of the MMA star’s victory over their shared rival Conor McGregor.

The American insisted talk of this proposed crossover bout is “absolutely” serious earlier this week and potential backers are already emerging.

Umar Kremlev, the outspoken General Secretary of the Russian Boxing Federation gave an interview on Friday in which he declared their intentions to host the event.

“If the fight will take place in the framework of boxing, then we are interested to hold it,” Kremlev told RSport.

“We are ready for this if Khabib wants it. Khabib has a good mastery of boxing, he showed it in front of McGregor, where he was one step ahead.”

When asked specifically where the bout would take place, Umar Kremlev simply replied: “Luzhniki,” referring to the 80,000 capacity 2018 World Cup final stadium.

Should the fight come off, it is still highly likely it would be held in Las Vegas, with Floyd Mayweather already stating the US city as his preferred destination.

However, if they can come up with an obscene amount of rubles, the boxer who calls himself ‘money’ could be swayed.

Earlier this year, Kremlev and Russia secured the World Boxing Super Series cruiserweight tournament final between Oleksandr Usyk and Murat Gassiev, which took place in Moscow despite the fact it was originally schedule for Saudi Arabia.
