The governing body would reconsider if a deal is done for the unification

However, there was some confusion brought about by wording in this decision, as it stated they have voted to ‘sanction’ the second fight, rather than ‘order’ it.

Now, the WBC president has clarified the situation, and explained that they would vote again should a deal be made for the undisputed heavyweight title bout.

“That's a fight that everybody has wanted to see for a long time,” Mauricio Sulaiman told the when asked about Joshua vs Wilder, “But unfortunately it did not materialise in September of this year.

“I do not want to anticipate anything but if there's something for the WBC board to vote on we will do so.

“When there's a unification bid as a request of course we will consider it but the WBC has voted for Deontay Wilder against Tyson Fury next.

“The WBC voted for the rematch. If Wilder has a request, every request has to be considered and reviewed but, for now, the WBC voted for the rematch and we have not yet received any other scenario.”

It is quite possible that this will all be rendered irrelevant as both Deontay Wilder and Tyson Fury have expressed a desire to make an immediate rematch next, regardless of anybody else’s decisions.

However, it is known that Eddie Hearn is planning talks with Wilder’s team while out in New York for Canelo Alvarez vs Rocky Fielding this week.
