Anthony Ogogo retires from boxing as he admits eyes are ‘too damaged’ for him to safely fight again
The 30-year-old had seven operations to try and fix the problem
Anthony Ogogo has announced his retirement from boxing due to eye injuries suffered in 2016.
The Olympic bronze medallist has been forced to quit the sport, having spent the last two and a half years undergoing operations to try and salvage his fighting career.
As a professional, Ogogo injury plagued his career and he endured three shoulder dislocations, broken bones and damaged ligaments and tendons.
Then, after reaching 11-0, he lost his first fight to Craig Cunningham during which his corner pulled him out as he suffered a shattered eye socket.
“Accepting the end gracefully is part of being a professional athlete,” the 30-year-old began in his statement.
“Sadly, after seven operations on my eyes in two and a half years, I am forced to admit that they are too damaged for me to safely return to the boxing ring.
“With a heavy heart, I have to retire from professional boxing with my dreams unfulfilled."
