Lennox Lewis says Andy Ruiz Jr and Anthony Joshua rematch has to take place in Mexico

Andy Ruiz Jr and Anthony Joshua are legally obliged to fight later this year - that much we know.

AJ activated the rematch clause in his contract following his shock loss to the Mexican-American at Madison Square Garden back on June 1, but the location of the rematch remains in debate.

Joshua's promoter Eddie Hearn had suggested that he thought the fight could be back at Madison Square Garden again, but the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff was the frontrunner.

Ruiz Jr refutes that suggestion and he wants the fight to take place in the States. Despite the fact he is now the IBF, WBA (super) and WBO champion, he might not have the decisive say.

Lennox Lewis, the last man to unify the heavyweight division, believes Ruiz Jr should have the chance to fight in Mexico since he made such history by becoming the champion.

“You know where I’d like to see that fight? In Mexico, baby,” Lewis told . “This is the first time in history we have a heavyweight champion from Mexico. I would have never thought that would be possible. To see Andy Ruiz do it in such fine fashion, why not? Give the fans in Mexico a chance to see the [Joshua-Ruiz Jr] fight, that they didn’t get a chance to see in New York to see it,” said Lewis.

Hearn has told talkSPORT in the past that he Joshua doesn't care where the rematch goes down, he thinks 'a ring is a ring'.

However, in trying to recover from a devastating loss, home comforts would surely be ideal for the return fight.
