Boxing news: Gervonta Davis appears to vacate world title, moving up to Vasyl Lomachenko’s weight class

Gervonta Davis has vacated his WBA super-featherweight title and is now moving up to lightweight, according to the sanctioning body’s latest rankings.

The 24-year-old, who previously also held the IBF super-featherweight belt, is now no longer listed as champion by the WBA and is instead ranked #1 in the division above.

This puts him in prime position to challenge unified WBA, WBC and WBO lightweight champion Vasyl Lomachenko, who beat Luke Campbell on Saturday night, however there may be a less exciting fight in play.

It is also notable that, despite not fighting in the past month, Yuriorkis Gamboa has leapfrogged Rances Barthelemy and Robert Easter Jr up to #2.

Last time out, Davis and Gamboa fought on the same show with the suggestion that they may face one another next.

It looks as though this may now be in the works, with the WBA possibly about to put one of their vacant secondary ‘regular’ belts on the line.

The WBA are infamous for their proliferation of unnecessary belts in boxing and this would just be the latest instalment.

This whole saga may come as a disappointment to some boxing fans, who were hoping to see Davis unify against Tevin Farmer at super-featherweight or challenge Lomachenko at lightweight.
