Boxing news: Gervonta Davis eyes future clash with Teofimo Lopez as he prepares for Yuriorkis Gamboa

Gervonta Davis has declared that he wants a future fight with fellow highly touted young American Teofimo Lopez.

When he won his first super-featherweight title three years ago, Davis was the youngest world champion in boxing.

Now aged 25, he is moving up to lightweight to compete for the WBA ‘regular’ belt and his place as the youngest champ has been taken by Lopez.

22-year-old Teofimo claimed the IBF lightweight crown with a sensational knockout of Richard Commey on December 14 and caught his rival’s eye with this statement win.

“He’s a good fighter. I believe that he’s got skills and things like that,” Gervonta told .

“He put on a great performance in his last fight.

“Hopefully we’ll get him in the near future, make all the big fights happen.”

The developing American scene is thriving at lightweight today, with WBC 'champion in recess' Devin Haney also just 22 and highly touted contender Ryan Garcia only 21.

Despite these big fights to come, Davis is refusing to overlook his next opponent on Saturday.

He concluded: “Facing Gamboa will definitely bring out some things that the sport didn’t see yet as far as my skills.

“Because Gamboa’s not coming as a slouch, he’s definitely coming to fight.

“My mindset on that is that he’s coming to fight.

“I’m giving it my all December 28. Hopefully he gives it his all and the fans win that night.”
