HISTORY MAN

Manny Pacquiao is now the only fighter to hold world titles in four different decades as we enter 2020

Manny Pacquiao has enjoyed a storied career in the squared circle, one which began in January 1995.

The boxing senator from the Philippines turned 41 in December, yet he remains a dominant figure at the 147lb limit - he is, after all, the WBA welterweight champion.

In July, he turned back time and produced a vintage, scintillating performance to beat Keith Thurman, who at the time was ten years younger than him.

That added Thurman to the list of top levels fighters, including Oscar De La Hoya, Miguel Cotto and Ricky Hatton, who have all be outclassed by Pacquiao.

Prior to that, 'Pac-Man' had comfortably outpointed Adrien Broner to begin 2019 with a win.

A year on and Pacquiao remains the only eight-division world champion in boxing history and with welterweight gold around his waist in 2020, he is now the only fighter to hold titles in four different decades.

His first came in 1998, when he defeated Chatchai Sasakul for the WBC flyweight strap and the 2000s would start with the IBF super bantamweight title.

Pacquiao dominated that decade, claiming belts at super featherweight, lightweight, light welterweight and welterweight.

Fresh from being named Fighter of the Decade in 2010, that year he punished Antonio Margarito over 12 spiteful rounds to capture the super welterweight belt, but also suffered losses to Juan Manuel Marquez and Floyd Mayweather Jr in a what would be a mixed ten years for Pacquiao both in and out of the ring.

A rematch between Pacquiao and Mayweather Jr has often been discussed, but with the latter hanging up his gloves with an unbeaten record, it's unlikely.

“It would be interesting but I don’t think he’s gonna come back," Hall of Fame inductee Shane Mosley said.

"He doesn’t want to lose the 50-0 record. Why would he come back? For what reason?

“Manny Pacquiao’s been in there with world [class] fighters, Floyd Mayweather’s been in there with UFC guys and kick boxers. It’s a whole different thing. For him to get back in there with Manny Pacquaio, I think that’s what they’re talking about, I don’t see that. But you never know, it could happen.”

Mikey Garcia and Danny Garcia are among the names listed for Pacquaio's next opponent in what would be his 72nd fight and with another decade underway, you can guarantee he still has a few more chapters left to write.
