Boxing news: Canelo Alvarez reportedly considering Japan fight with Ryota Murata, instead of Callum Smith or Billy Joe Saunders

Canelo Alvarez’s representatives are reportedly in ‘serious talks’ to potentially fight Ryota Murata next.

The Mexican star had been expected to challenge one of Britain’s super-middleweight champions, Callum Smith or Billy Joe Saunders, in his upcoming outing, but could now change course.

BJS was said to be the frontrunner until the promoters poured cold water on the idea.

Now, according to , Canelo vs Murata is a very real possibility to take place this spring in Japan.

Last month Canelo stated he would love to fight in the country one day, though did not mention his plans could come to fruition this quickly.

It’s understood that nothing is confirmed yet and that, as things stand, Murata is one of three potential opponents.

A safe bet would suggest Smith and Saunders remain as the other two.

Regardless, this news will come as a blow to the British pair, who are both hoping to secure the golden ticket fight against boxing’s biggest name.

Should neither of them get the call, Eddie Hearn has previously stated he would like them to face each other in what would be a WBA & WBO super-middleweight title unification.
