Oscar De La Hoya's bizarre stint in the commentary booth made him the centre of attention during the Jake Paul vs Ben Askren undercard on Saturday night.

As he is making a comeback as part of a future Triller Fight Club event on July 3, the 48-year-old joined the commentary team for this show, but appeared worse for wear while doing so.

He was brought in for the second undercard fight as former IBF cruiserweight champion Steve Cunningham faced ex-UFC heavyweight champion Frank Mir.

The fight began with Mir attempting to pressure Cunningham, but the natural boxer quickly took control.

Cunningham utilised his jab to dictate the majority of the action, but Mir's sheer size and unorthodox style caused issues at times.

Mir took the fight long and kept coming forwards throughout, despite taking numerous clean punches and clearly looking fatigued.

In the end, it went the full six rounds and Cunningham won by unanimous decision with scores of 60-54, 60-54, 58-56.

Regardless, it was De La Hoya's commentary which stole the headlines.

Prior to the bout, he explained his own comeback by paying tribute to Mike Tyson's return.

Oscar said: "Mike Tyson. Mike Tyson, I love you. I love you, Mike Tyson.

"Mike Tyson, I love you because you inspired me at 56 years old to make me know that I can do it, you looked great, you feel great, you were amazing and now it's my turn."

Once the fight started, De La Hoya shouted encouragement for Mir: "There is a reason Cunningham has nine losses. He has no chin."

He also pointed out the size of the small ring: "They're fighting in a phone booth, baby."

And encouraged body shots from both men by repeatedly shouting: "Deflate the balloon, let's go baby."

As the fight wound down, he gave one last shout of encouragement: "The next day I always asked myself, 'Did I give it my all? Did I give it my all? Let's go baby, let's go Cunningham, let's go Mir."

And his appearance did not go unnoticed by others in the fight game. Former UFC heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier could not get enough of the fight and in conversation with ESPN journalist Ariel Helwani, tweeted: "Oscar De La Hoya is plastered!

"This is the craziest event I’ve ever seen in my life. And I can’t turn it off."

Former middleweight champion Chris Weidman simply wrote: "Oscar is feeling good right now."
