Price had already beaten Karel Sedlacek and Matthew Dennant on his way to the third round of the competition when he faced Brendan Dolan.

However while being 4-2 down in the third round clash, the 38-year-old decided that enough was enough.

Posting on Instagram, Price said: "Travel all the way to Wigan to play in a professional game and we have to play in less than amateur conditions.

"Never have I ever given a game up. Well that's me out of tomorrow as well.

"Gutted because my game was really good today and I rely on these events so much."

Price is now expected to return to action on night three of the Premier League in Glasgow on Thursday.

Luke Littler ended up winning the tournament on what was his debut Players Championship appearance, beating Ryan Searle in the final's deciding leg.
