Tiger Woods to fall short like Fergie did with Bob Paisley?

Tiger Woods' dream of beating Jack Nicklaus' long standing record for winning the most majors looks in doubt after the golfer was ruled out of the Masters.

Nicklaus currently has 18 triumphs compared to Woods' 14, but won't get a chance to don the famous green jacket for a fifth time because a back injury has sidelined him for the event at the Augusta.

At one time Woods seemed invincible on a golf course, but after claiming 14 majors in the space of 11 years between 1997 and 2008, the American hasn't won any of the big four titles for six years.

Woods' unfortunate situation reminded us of other instances when sportsmen fell short of making history, when they once looked sho-ins for glory.
