Rory McIlroy makes history with mid-round interview at The Masters and talks viewers through shots via earpiece

Rory McIlroy has made history as the first golfer to be mic’d up during a round at The Masters.
The Northern Irishman had an earpiece inserted for the ninth hole at the Augusta National Golf Club, and talked through his second shot to a global audience.
It was the first time such insight had been given at a major tournament, with The Masters the first on the 2023 calendar.
CBS were also given live access to Max Homa, but McIlroy was the first to speak, as he walked to the green after leaving his second shot 37 feet short of the hole.
McIlroy had driven his tee shot 352 yards, and with 110 left to cover, he came up short, before a voice from the studio cut in during his walk to the green.
“What do you think? What’s your impression?” McIlroy was asked by the TV commentator.
He replied: “Yeah I just eased off on it a little, I think just in the back of my mind obviously you don’t want to go long at this pin.
“I just eased off and probably pitched it five or six yards shorter than I wanted to.
“Probably just got that putt up the hill and hopefully have a decent look at it and if I don’t hole it get it around the hole and start the back nine afresh.”
It was then commented: “It’s one of the beauties of Augusta National, we all know the course so well as you’re walking up the hill, you probably know the line on this putt already.”
McIlroy added: “Yeah I should do, if I can see the ball… yeah from where it is it’s actually a pretty straight putt, it might go a little left or right coming off the bunker.”
McIlroy, who is yet to win The Masters, called it right, with his follow-up shot just short, leaving him with a putt for par.
