Who knew storms could have a sense of humour?

Well that certainly seemed to be the case in California as the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am was called off at a rather amusing point.

Wyndham Clark was declared the winner of the event overnight as storms caused the final day of action to be cancelled.

That gave the 30-year-old his third Tour win in nine months thanks to a stunning course record 12-under-par 60 on Saturday.

But more amusingly for golf fans was the number of holes that had been played when the event was called off - 54.

That’s the same number as a LIV event, with the controversial Saudi-backed breakaway league regularly panned for being too easy to win below the usual 72-hole PGA events.

On top of that, Pebble Beach is one of eight new ‘Signature Events’ on the Tour which doesn’t have a cut off, meaning all of the limited field receive prize money.

That’s again reminiscent of LIV, which has been hugely criticised for their system of paying golfers before the event, taking away an element of competition and motivation.

Responding to the PGA’s decision to call-off Pebble Beach, a number of fans noticed the coincidence on Instagram, with the top comment on their post reading: “This was literally a LIV event with limited field, no cut, and 54 holes.”

A number of other followers echoed that sentiment, with one writing: “According to the LIV haters this doesn’t count because it was only 54 holes.”

Many complained about the PGA’s call not to postpone action until Monday, but they made their decision clear in a statement.

It read: “The storm affecting the Monterey Peninsula throughout the day Sunday is forecast to continue into the early hours of Monday with very strong winds.

“Although conditions are forecast to improve through the morning Monday, after consultation with the Monterey County Emergency Authorities, who have implemented a shelter in place order until early tomorrow morning for the greater Pebble Beach community, and out of an abundance of caution for the safety of all constituents, there will be no play on Monday.

“Therefore in accordance with the PGA Tour regulations the tournament results will be final through the conclusion of 54 holes.”

Responding to his victory, Clark added: "It's pretty surreal right now. It's maybe not the way you dream of winning.

"With that said, a lot of us yesterday had, not that we knew, but we definitely had this outside shot and thinking that maybe this is our last round."
