Scheffler was detained by Louisville police, handcuffed and arrested before the second round of the PGA Championship at Valhalla Golf Club.

The reigning Masters winner was jailed, had a booking photo taken and received four charges, including second-degree assault of a police officer and third-degree criminal mischief, before he was released in time for the start of the second round.

Scheffler initially didn't answer questions when he returned to Valhalla.

But as he warmed up for his tee time, fans cheered the 27-year-old American golfer.

"There is Scottie Scheffler," an announcer said.

"Scottie! Scottie!" shouted applauding fans.

Holding an umbrella, Scheffler was making his way toward the course when Fowler walked up.

"You all good?" Fowler asked.

Fowler then warmly patted his fellow golfer on the left shoulder as Scheffler walked by.

"Thanks, buddy," Scheffler said.

Scheffler was tied-for-12th at 4-under par after the first round of play.

Fowler was tied-for-85th at 1-over.

Xander Schauffele led the field after a blistering 9-under par 62, which tied a first-round majors record.

There was a heavy police presence near Valhalla early Friday morning, due to a fatal collision that delayed the start of the second round.

Scheffler's arrest was not directly related to the fatality and he was keen to express his sympathies to the victim upon his return to the club in a statement.

“This morning, I was proceeding as directed by police officers. It was a very chaotic situation, understandably so considering the tragic accident that had occurred earlier, and there was a big misunderstanding of what I thought I was being asked to do.

I never intended to disregard any of the instructions. I’m hopeful to put this to the side and focus on golf today.

“Of course, all of us involved in the tournament express our deepest sympathies to the family of the man who passed away in the earlier accident this morning. It truly puts everything in perspective.”
