Scottie Scheffler started his pre-round routine in a jail cell and still managed to finish day two in a strong position at the PGA Championship.

The world no1's second day got off to an astonishing start when he was arrested near Valhalla Golf Club.

But after being detained, the 27-year-old returned to the course and finished the day five-under-par and nine-under overall as one of the competition's pace-setters.

Arriving just 57 minutes before his revised tee time of 3.08pm BST, Scheffler wasted little time in getting his second round up and running with a birdie on the 10th hole.

It was a sign of things to come as Scheffler put a difficult day behind him to put in an impressive showing given the circumstances.

Speaking after his round, Scheffler said: “I feel like my head is still spinning. I can’t really explain what happened this morning but I did spend some time stretching in a jail cell – that was a first for me.

“That was part of my warmup and I was just sat waiting and when doing my warmup I still felt there was a chance I could come out and play.

“I started going through my routine and tried to get my heart rate down as much as I could today.

“I still feel like my head is spinning but I was fortunate to make it back out and to play some golf.”

The American was placed in handcuffs and taken to a local police station after a misunderstanding led to his attempt to drive past a police officer into Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, Kentucky early Friday morning.

There had earlier been a fatal traffic accident near Valhalla when a pedestrian died after being struck by a shuttle bus.

Scheffler was detained and faces charges of second-degree assault of a police officer, third-degree criminal mischief, reckless driving, and disregarding traffic signals from an officer directing traffic.

NFL legend Tony Romo reveals how 'insane' Scottie Scheffler has never broken 70 in over 500 rounds of golf against him

A statement on his behalf said: "This morning, I was proceeding as directed by police officers.

"It was a very chaotic situation, understandably so considering the tragic accident that had occurred earlier, and there was a big misunderstanding of what I thought I was being asked to do.

"I never intended to disregard any of the instructions. I'm hopeful to put this to the side and focus on golf today.

"Of course, all of us involved in the tournament express our deepest sympathies to the family of the man who passed away in the earlier accident this morning. It truly puts everything in perspective."

Scheffler will be hoping that day three in Vallhala is less dramatic than day two as he looks to challenge Xander Schaffele and Collin Morikawa at the top of the leaderboard.
