Rory McIlroy will have to keep waiting to break his major drought.

Despite becoming 'Single Rory' before the PGA Championship, the No. 3 ranked golfer in the world finished tied-for-12th at 12-under par at Valhalla.

Xander Schauffele made his historic first round 62 pay off as he kept Bryson DeChambeau at bay to win the tournament in Louisville.

McIlroy kept a low profile during the PGA Championship, which followed the announcement of his divorce from wife, Erica Stoll, after seven years of marriage.

Following the tournament, he agreed to answer just two questions from a reporter from RTE.

"Obviously started the week well and then I've obviously played decent over the weekend," McIlroy said.

"That six-hole stretch on the back nine yesterday, not being able to hole any putts, I'll probably rue that. Then the 71 on Friday, as well, was obviously not what I was looking for. Obviously put myself too far back.

"Overall playing solid, game is in good shape and I've got a week off and then another busy stretch coming up."

Schauffele sank a 6-foot birdie putt on the final hole to win the PGA Championship for his first major.

He closed with a 6-under 65 to edge DeChambeau, who himself made a 10-foot birdie putt on the last.

Scottie Scheffler, who battled through a tough weekend filled with off-the-course drama, remained No. 1 in the Official World Golf Rankings.

Schauffele is up to No. 2 after his PGA Championship win, which saw the American golfer receive the huge Wanamaker Trophy.

McIlroy slid to third in the world.

But he remains upbeat about ending his major drought and continuing to play like one of the best golfers in the sport.

Asked about the state of his game following back-to-back wins before the US PGA, McIlroy added: "Yeah, I'm feeling good about that.

"I've been on a big stretch of golf here. I think this was my sixth event in seven weeks. I've got a week off and then I'm playing another four in a row.

"I'm feeling good about my game. I feel like things are sort of clicking more, especially after the win in New Orleans. Obviously played well last week in Charlotte. Have a week here to sort of reset and try to get going again."

The 35-year-old McIlroy filed divorce documents in Florida last Monday, with court records showing the Northern Irishman submitted a 'petition for dissolution of marriage'.

They also noted that the pair's relationship is 'irretrievably broken'.

A spokesperson for McIlroy confirmed the news in a statement which read: "Rory McIlroy's communications team confirmed today that a divorce has been filed.

"They stressed Rory's desire to ensure this difficult time is as respectful and amicable as possible. He will not be making any further comment."
