Scottie Scheffler has ten PGA Tour victories to his name but that haul would have been one better if not for his best friend.

After a hectic few weeks for the world number one, Scheffler is back in Texas for the 2024 Charles Schwab Challenge.

Living in Dallas, Scheffler is a regular at the tournament which is held at Colonial Country Club in nearby Fort Worth.

And Scheffler will no doubt be glad to return to some home comforts following his dramatic arrest outside Valhalla at the PGA Championship last week.

He was caught up in the mayhem that followed after a fatal accident in Louisville, Kentucky and spent time in a jail cell before being released and ultimately securing a stunning top-ten finish in the major.

The Masters champion and new father faces a quick turnaround to be back in action but he’ll be eager to claim glory again.

Scheffler’s ten career wins have all come since February 2022.

He won four events that year, including his first Green Jacket at Augusta, but just missed out on victory at the Charles Schwab.

And the man who beat him? His best mate, Sam Burns.

Scheffler and Burns have been close friends for several years but came face-to-face in the play-off at the 2022 Charles Schwab.

Both players finished at nine-under-par after Burns raced through the field with a superb final day 65.

In the play-off, Scheffler hit his approach to around 30 feet while Burn’s effort flew the green, leaving him with a daunting 40-foot putt from the fringe.

Scheffler couldn’t bear to watch as Burns stepped up to it and fired from off the green.

With Scheffler still looking out over the water to the side of the 18th hole, Burn’s putt tracked straight before turning right just at the end to find the bottom of the cup!

Scheffler, stunned by his rival’s heroics, then had the chance to prolong the play-off but his vital putt ran just wide of its target.

The two great friends embraced before Burns said: “Hitting that putt, that's just the icing on the cake.

"I think, just with the conditions today, and how tough it was playing, I'm just so proud of the way we hung in there.

"I just played such a good round of golf today.”

Scheffler, who made his second career hole-in-one at the Charles Schwab last year, returns to Colonial looking for his fifth win of the season again.

As well as the Masters, he’s won the Arnold Palmer Invitational, The Players and the RBC Heritage already this year.

Burns isn’t in the field this week and Scheffler is once more the red-hot favourite to take the title.

He’ll be hoping for a quieter week back in Texas and let his golf dominate the headlines.
