Is there any better job than to caddie for the world’s best golfers around Augusta National?

Well, if you're Rory McIlroy's caddie, Harry Diamond, you can also enjoy front-row seats to sporting history with his Masters triumph.

Northern Irishman McIlroy was keen to heap praise on the former amateur standout after finally claiming his career Grand Slam.

The now five-time major winner joined forces with Diamond in 2017 after parting ways with long-time looper JP Fitzgerald.

Diamond has endured numerous criticisms that have questioned his skills as a caddie, but at Augusta, he proved his weight in gold.

How much do caddies make at The Masters?

The average weekly wage of a PGA Tour caddie is reported to vary from $1,500 to $4,000 (£1,100-£3,000).

That sum of money is usually determined by how experienced the caddie is and who they are caddying for at the time.

Brennan Little, a looper of over 25 years, told : "I think $2,000 (£1,500) a week is pretty average, but everything is worked out between you and the player.

"After a few years, you'll get a raise. Or you'll get bonuses at the end of the year. It just varies by the player."

But being a caddie at The Masters is expensive as they have to cover all of their expenses depending on any individual agreements with their player.

ESPN analyst and former caddie Michael Collins explained in 2021: "Caddies get a regular weekly paycheck because they have to pay for all of their own expenses, airfare, hotel, rental car, food.

"So, they get a weekly paycheck from the player, and then you get a percentage of what the player wins if they make the cut."

How much did McIlroy's caddie make?

As mentioned by Collins, on top of that wage, caddies also get a percentage of their players’ prize money at a tournament.

The general split is that they receive 10 percent of the prize money if their player wins The Masters, 7 percent for a top-10 finish and five percent for a finish elsewhere in the leaderboard.

The total prize pot for The Masters this year is $21million (£16million) - the most in the tournament's 89-year history.

McIlroy received $4.2m after beating Justin Rose in a play-off, which meant Diamond took home his cut of $420,000.

By winning the event last April, Scottie Scheffler claimed $3.6m of the $20m prize, with his bagman, Ted Scott, earning $360,000, as part of the reported $4m he netted in 2024.

In 2023, the prize was a little less, but winner Jon Rahm’s caddie Adam Hayes will have earned around $320,000 of the $3.24m total prize for those four days.

What do caddies do?

A caddie's job is extremely important, even though it may seem that they just follow the golfers around, passing them clubs.

They actually make a huge impact on their player, offering advice on clubs to use, distances to greens and shots to make.

On top of that, they will also advise swing techniques and use in-depth course information to help with certain decisions on each hole.

Caddies are in constant conversation with their player in between holes and shots during tournaments, sometimes offering some morale support and motivation too.

It usually means that the player works with someone they are close to outside of the game or have built a trusting relationship with.

McIlroy spoke glowingly about his caddie, Diamond, after winning The Masters, admitting that this win was ‘just as much his and it is mine’.

Their relationship goes far beyond golf as the two were close childhood friends, with Diamond also serving as McIlroy's best man at his wedding in 2018.

“I’ve known Harry since I was seven years old,” McIlroy revealed whilst holding back tears in his post-round press conference.

He added: "I met him on the putting green at Holywood Golf Club. We've had so many good times together. He's been like a big brother to me the whole way through my life.

"To be able to share this with him after all the close calls that we've had, all the [nonsense] that he's had to take from people that don't know anything about the game, yeah, this one is just as much his as it is mine.

"He's a massive part of what I do, and I couldn't think of anyone better to share it with than him.”

McIlroy finally completed the career grand slam, ending an 11-year major drought, after a dramatic and historic day at Augusta.

He did so the hard way via a play-off after spurning a glorious chance to win in regulation - with Diamond managing to settle his nerves.

"Harry and I were walking to the golf cart to bring us back to the 18th tee, and he said to me, 'Well pal, we would have taken this on Monday morning,'" said McIlroy.

"I'm like, 'Yeah, absolutely we would have.' That was an easy reset. I just kept telling myself, just make the same swing you made in regulation. I hit a great drive up there, and the rest is history."
