  • 'Dreams do come true'

Rory McIlroy has posted on social media for the first time since winning The Masters yesterday.

And the caption above an image of him lifting the trophy in the iconic green jacket sums up his feelings.

He wrote: "Dreams do come true."

It will be a day he will never, ever forget.

  • Floodgates open?

Rory McIlroy has another incredible record in his sights.

No golfer in history has ever completed a 'Calendar Slam' - winning all four majors in the same year.

But after winning The Masters, McIlroy is going to give it a go.

He will now likely be considered the overwhelming favourite heading into two of the remaining three majors this season.

And with the monkey finally off his back, along with two big PGA Tour wins already under his belt in 2025, Sunday at Augusta might just be the start...

"You can't win all four majors in a year if you haven't won the first one," he told Sky Sports with a smile yesterday.

"There's a lot of golf left to play this year. The next major is at Quail Hollow, which is somewhere I've loved for the most part of my career.

";The Open at Portrush, The Ryder Cup at Bethpage...

"There's a lot of golf left, I've gotten off to a great start obviously, and I can't wait to keep it going."

  • Very costly error

Ludvig Aberg made it consecutive years coming close to Masters success at Augusta over the weekend.

The young superstar looked to be in contention for the Green Jacket on Sunday, following a second-place finish in 2024.

However, a late collapse cost him a potential title challenge along with an incredible amount of money...

Aberg was nine-under-par on the 18th and final hole of the tournament, but he crumbled at the last.

He carded a triple bogey after going back and forth on the green and seemingly losing all composure.

That dropped him back to -6, and he fell from what would have been T3 all the way down to seventh place.

It was a damaging mistake, and it cost him a chunk of prize money too, with the triple bogey seeing him miss out on over $500,000.

    Ouch.

  • 'Truly special'

Tommy Fleetwood has labelled Rory McIlroy's Masters win as the 'greatest mentally resilient achievement ever'.

Fleetwood, who finished T21 at Augusta, sent a touching message to both his good friend McIlroy and Justin Rose.

He posted an image of him with his family, the Northern Irishman and fellow pal Shane Lowry on X.

His post read: "A place alongside the greats of the game and possibly the greatest mentally resilient achievement ever in our sport.

"So happy for you Rory McIlroy and everyone involved, and to be there to witness it was truly special.

"Justin Rose, you are and always will be one of my golfing idols.

"Thank you to everyone who supported me out there this week. Lots of good with things to improve and memories for a lifetime with my family again at that very special place that is Augusta and The Masters!"

  • Showing his class

Justin Rose just missed out on Masters glory last night.

But he remained classy in his response, posting on social media soon after to congratulate Rory McIlroy.

"I gave it everything…. Congratulations @McIlroyRory on winning the @TheMasters and completing the Grand Slam," Rose wrote on X.

"Very cool sharing the green with you in that moment.

"Thank you Team Rose as always for all the support during the week. We go again."

Fans have reacted to the post, piling praise on the Englishman.

One fan said: "A world-class player and class act. The younger generation of golfers have a role model!"

Another wrote: "You’re a class act Rosey. Your time will come."

"Well done Justin, you stuck in there big time and proved you really are world class yet again," a third said.

  • 'A source of immense pride'

The Northern Ireland Assembly has written to Prime Minister Keir Starmer to officially nominate Rory McIlroy for a knighthood after his historic Masters win.

A letter from Jonathan Buckley MLA read: "I am writing to respectfully urge you to consider Mr. Rory McIlroy for a knighthood in recognition of his extraordinary contribution to sport, following his momentous victory at the 2025 Masters Tournament.

"With this win, Mr. McIlroy has completed the career Grand Slam - joining the most elite company in golf's storied history - and, in doing do has become the first man from Northern Ireland to wear the coveted green jacket. This is not only a personal triumph but a source of immense pride for Northern Ireland, and indeed the entire United Kingdom.

"Beyond his sporting excellence, Mr. McIlroy has been a global ambassador for golf and an inspirational figure for countless young athletes. He has conducted himself with consistent grace, humility and sportsmanship throughout his career, elevating not just his own profile, but that of the sport itself.

"A knighthood would be a fitting recognition of his unparalleled achievements and the pride he has bestowed upon our nation."

  • Heritage site

Rory McIlroy will take a deserved rest after finally fulfilling his life-long ambition to win the Masters and complete a career Grand Slam.

Golf’s relentless schedule means tournaments are already taking place this week, with the RBC Heritage at Harbor Town Golf Links.

The five-time major champion usually skips this tournament as players are not required to compete in signature events.

McIlroy did make an appearance at the RBC Heritage last year, tying for 33rd, 12 shots back of champion Scottie Scheffler.

However, he won't be looking to add to his success this week, with Scheffler returning to South Carolina to defend his title.

McIlroy, meanwhile, will reunite with Shane Lowry to defend their title at the PGA Tour‘s Zurich Classic of New Orleans.

  • Knight of the Realm?

Rory McIlroy will bask in the glory of finally claiming the most coveted accolade of his career: The Masters.

Now, he may be set for all the privileges that come with completing golf’s career Grand Slam, including a potential knighthood.

King Charles was quick to pass on his congratulations to the golfing world number two after the Masters.

The 76-year-old wrote in a post from the official Royal Family X account: “Congratulations [Rory McIlroy] on your historic win.”

The 35-year-old is no stranger to being honoured by the royal family following a career highlight.

McIlroy, then aged 22, was awarded an MBE in the Queen’s New Year honours list following his US Open victory in 2011.

He would join an illustrious list of golfers to have been given the honour by the royal family, including Brit trio Sir Nick Faldo, Sir Henry Cotton, and Dame Laura Davies - as well as Kiwi pair Sir Bob Charles, and Dame Lydia Ko.

  • Top Trumps

US President and keen golfer Donald Trump has hailed Rory McIlroy’s Masters win as 'amazing'.

Speaking to the media from onboard Air Force One, Trump – who owns several golf courses around the world – is the latest to offer the Nothern Irishman his congratulations.

"I have to congratulate Rory," Trump said.

"That took tremendous courage. He was having a hard time, but it showed great guts and stamina and courage.

"People have no idea how tough that is. He came back.

"It’s better for him that it happened that way because that showed real courage to have come back from what could've been a tragedy – it was amazing.

    "Justin Rose was great.

"Look, they're great athletes under tremendous pressure. But unless you're a golfer, you don't understand that hundredth of an inch makes a difference between a great shot and a horrible shot.”

  • Keep calm and carry on

Rory McIlroy finally completed the career grand slam, ending an 11-year major drought, after a dramatic and historic day at Augusta.

He did so the hard way via a play-off after spurning a glorious chance to win in regulation - with his caddie, Harry Diamond, managing to settle his nerves.

"Harry and I were walking to the golf cart to bring us back to the 18th tee, and he said to me, 'Well pal, we would have taken this on Monday morning,'" said McIlroy.

"I'm like, 'Yeah, absolutely we would have.' That was an easy reset.

"I just kept telling myself, just make the same swing you made in regulation. I hit a great drive up there, and the rest is history."

  • Full circle

Rory McIlroy revealed ex-Masters champion Angel Cabrera left a note in his locker before his triumph at Augusta on Sunday.

Cabrera returned to the Masters for the first time since 2019 after serving two-and-a-half years in prison.

The Argentine, who won in 2009, played alongside McIlroy in the infamous final pairing in 2011 when the Northern Irishman threw away a four-shot lead and carded 80.

"You know, since 2011, I think it's so ironic, as well. I got to my locker this morning and I opened it up, and there was a note in there from Angel Cabrera, and just wishing me luck," McIlroy told the media.

"And Angel Cabrera was the player I played with on the final day in 2011, it was a nice touch and a little bit ironic at the same time.

"It's been 14 long years, but thankfully I got the job done."

  • 'Amen'

Rory McIlroy choked back tears in a tribute to his caddie Harry Diamond after finally winning the Masters on Sunday.

Glory at Augusta ended an 11-year wait for a fifth major and immortalised McIlroy in history as the sixth man to complete the career grand slam.

During his barren run at golf's biggest events, many have criticised the Northern Irishman's caddie and told McIlroy to consider a switch.

The prevailing narrative has sometimes been that Diamond got the job because of his friendship with McIlroy, rather than his caddying expertise.

But the world no.2 has always pushed back against that argument - and got emotional when asked about Diamond on Sunday.

“I’ve known Harry since I was seven years old,” McIlroy said.

“I met him on the putting green at Holywood Golf Club. We’ve had so many good times together. He’s been like a big brother to me the whole way through my life.

“To be able to share this with him after all the close calls that we’ve had, all the crap that he’s had to take from people that don’t know anything about the game, yeah, this one is just as much his as it is mine.

“He’s a massive part of what I do, and I couldn’t think of anyone better to share it with than him.”

  • Dream come true

Rory McIlroy hailed a 'dream come true' after beating Justin Rose in a play-off to win the 89th Masters and finally complete the career grand slam.

McIlroy threatened to squander a five-shot lead with eight holes to play before holding his nerve to birdie the first extra hole after an extraordinary final day at Augusta National.

"It's a dream come true," McIlroy said. "I have dreamt about that moment for as long as I can remember.

"Watching Tiger (Woods) here in 1997 do what he did, winning his first green jacket, I think that inspired so many of my generation to want to emulate what he did.

"It feels incredible. This is my 17th time here and I started to wonder if it would ever be my time.

"The last 10 years coming here with the burden of the grand slam on my shoulder and trying to achieve it, I wonder what we're going to talk about going into next year.

"I'm absolutely honoured, thrilled and proud to be able to call myself a Masters champion."

McIlroy admitted it was "all relief" that made him sink to his knees after holing the winning putt, adding: "It was 14 years in the making, from having a four-shot lead (after three rounds) in 2011.

"There was a lot of pent up emotion that came out on the 18th green and a moment like that makes all the years and close calls worth it."

  • All business

Bryson DeChambeau has revealed that Rory McIlroy did not speak to him at all during the final round of the Masters.

Ten months after DeChambeau edged out McIlroy to win his second US Open title at Pinehurst, the pair made up the final group at Augusta National, where McIlroy almost threw away a five-shot lead before beating Justin Rose in a play-off.

Asked after slipping to a tie for fifth following a closing 73 how McIlroy was feeling as he signed his scorecard, DeChambeau said: "No idea. Didn't talk to me once all day."

Pressed by another reporter on whether he had tried to initiate conversation during the round, DeChambeau added: "He wouldn't talk to me."

Despite the lack of conversation, DeChambeau said he felt bad for McIlroy when the Northern Irishman hit his approach to the 13th into Rae's Creek to run up a double bogey.

"I wanted to cry for him," he said. "I mean, as a professional, you just know to hit it in the middle of the green, and I can't believe he went for it, or must have just flared it.

"But I've hit bad shots in my career, too, and it happens. When you're trying to win a major championship, especially out here, Sunday of Augusta, the Masters, you have to just do it and get the job done and do it right.

"There were times where it looked like he had full control and at times where it's like, what's going on? Kind of looked like one of my rounds, actually."

"To win all four major championships takes unwavering perseverance and the courage to overcome adversity time and time again in the face of immeasurable pressure few have ever experienced. Rory showed true grit today and also through the entire tournament.

  • Always the bridesmaid

Justin Rose has finished second in his last two Majors.

It is a cruel blow to come so close but he is looking for the silver lining after a second playoff defeat in the Masters.

Eight years ago he was beaten by another Ryder Cup teammate in Sergio Garcia.

"It's definitely tough, but I bounced back pretty well from that, too. I went on to be world number one after that so I used it to my advantage," he said afterwards.

"Last two majors I've played I've come up in second place, but it's exactly what I'm trying to do with my career at this stage.

"It's more evidence that I'm doing some really good work."

"I just said, listen, this is a historic moment in golf, isn't it, someone who achieves the career Grand Slam," he said.

"I said it was pretty cool to be able to share that moment with him.

  • Mind the gap

There was 11 years between Rory McIlroy's last Major triumph in the 2014 PGA Championship and Sunday's Masters triumph.

The gap is the joint-most of all time.

Henry Cotton, Julius Boros, Hale Irwin, Ben Crenshaw and Tiger Woods are the others.

Woods famously broke his own duck with a 15th Major triumph at Augusta in 2019.
