Adam Scott lands maiden major with thrilling Masters triumph

Adam Scott clinched the first major of his career with a dramatic Masters triumph at a rain-soaked Augusta.

The 32-year-old, who threw away a four-shot lead with four holes to play to lose the Open last year, beat Angel Cabrera in a play-off to become the first Australian to receive the green jacket.

Both players had birdied the 18th in regulation to reach nine under before Scott holed a 15ft putt in deteriorating light across the 10th green on the second extra hole to deprive Argentina's 2009 winner.

Scott's fellow countryman Jason Day had led by two with three to play but bogeyed the 16th and 17th to finish seven under.

Tiger Woods, penalised two shots for an incorrect drop in Friday's second round, was two further back after a closing 70 alongside another Aussie, Marc Leishman.

"I don't know how that happens," Scott said of the dramatic finale. "It seems a long way away from last July when I was trying to win another major. It fell my way today, there was some luck there. It was incredible."
