Colby Covington dominates Jorge Masvidal to claim victory at UFC 272 in grudge match – and then calls out Dustin Poirier

Colby Covington won the battle of the former friends with a dominant victory over Jorge Masvidal in their welterweight clash at UFC 272.
Covington claimed the win by unanimous decision (49–46, 50–44, 50–45) in Las Vegas to settle the bitter rivalry between the ex-training partners.
There was no hug after the fight. In fact, the bad blood continued with plenty of trash talking as Covington moved on to call out Dustin Poirier, lobbing insults at The Diamond’s wife and child in the process.
The fight went down as many expected with Covington, 34, making his superior wrestling tell and wearing Masvidal, 37, down to score the win. It wasn’t the brutal war many hoped for or UFC advertised.
Masvidal sprinted out of the traps at Covington, but did not actually throw a strike. Similar to how he started against Diaz, Masvidal made sure to stand in front of Colby and stay there.
The first big hit of he fight came from Masvidal landing a leg kick that wobbled Covington and then he stuffed a takedown from his former teammate as Chaos went to work against the cage.
Eventually, Covington did manage to get Masvidal down to the ground and he was looking to lock in a choke beit a rear-naked one or a triangle, but Gamebred fought relentlessly against it.
Masvidal did eventually get back to his feet and exchange a few strikes, but still, it had to be taking something out of Masvidal’s gas tank and Covington would take the round.
Into the second round, Masvidal finally got his hands going on the strength of the great work he was doing with his low kicks.
Covington thought he had Masvifal pinned against the cage, but a low blow from Chaos meant the position was broken and he was warned again. His first warning was for an eye poke in the first round.
Masvidal opened a cut over Covington’s left eye with a overhand right and while Covington nearly took his back again towards the end of the round, both men finished on their feet with Covington actually landing a flurry. It was probably one round a piece heading into the third.
Covington started the third round fast and secured a takedown after 90 seconds. For the first time in the fight, Covington secured full guard and looked to land nasty elbows on Gamebred. Given the energy Masvidal had already exerted, it was not a promising sign.
Masvidal was dominated for the whole round on the floor, but he did get to his feet and land two nice shots before the buzzer. It was certainly a big round for Covington, though.
Into the fourth round and the fatigue was showing for Masvidal. Although his shots still appeared to have some pop in them, he wasn’t able to evade Covington near the cage and that was when Chaos, an all-American wrestler, was enjoying his best success.
With Masvidal exhausted, Covington finally started to get the better of the striking exchanges he was clearly losing in the early rounds.
He had worn Masvidal down, no doubt, but a right hook from Masvidal forced Covington to drop to one knee and he was badly hurt for a few seconds. However, Masvidal was just too exhausted to capitalise on the opening.
Covington, once again, exploded out the traps to kick off the final round and managed to take Masvidal down yet again.
Masvidal kept his chin tucked and thus, Covington wasn’t able to secure the choke he so desperately wanted, but he did lay plenty of shots in to chip away at Masvidal and coast to victory.
